PDF export doesn't work

Detailed description 
When clicking the "PDF" view link at the bottom of a wiki page, it provides a file to download, but that file
is actually an XHTML file describing an error. Apparently it can't find the PDF file that should have been generated;
in the directory shown in the error, there is a .tex file but no .pdf.

Hi David, do you have pdflatex installed? 

Just trying to ascertain problem area: could you please open
a shell and try "pdflatex -version". If you don't have
it installed, could you please let me know what the following
prints:
  ruby -e "p system('pdflatex -version')"

If you do have it installed i'll dig some more.
