It would be very useful to have an additional property of each item: "Borrowed", to list items that are borrowed
(as opposed to loaned).

Indeed this would be useful, but rather than add on
"Borrowed" alongside "Loaned" I was considering
having an "Owner" for each copy of a book, and then
building a more general borrowing and lending vocabulary around
that. So this won't be added in the near future. But it will
be included in a future version.

In the mean time, however, you could always add a 'borrowed'
Tag to each of your borrowed books (and maybe add a Note saying
who it's borrowed from). Then you could create a new Smart Library
with [Tags] [contains] borrowed
