There has been talk of expanding Alexandria in this direction,
eventually, but at the present I would suggest other programs
such as GCStar and Tellico, which already support music CDs and
movies on various media.
Can I just note that if anything like this feature is added,
it would be a massive undertaking. Books, CDs and DVDs are only
really similar in one respect: they are mass-produced copies
of an identifiable artistic or informative work. In every other
important respect, they differ. So presenting a uniform interface
which is useful in any respect, (and not just a list of icons
with titles) to deal with mixed media would (in my view) present
a huge challenge in user-interface design.
It is not that I am opposed to the idea, I think it would be
an incredibly useful addition to the program. I am just being
realistic; with 2 or 3 active developers at our current level
of commitment, I can't see the feature being added soon. But
I will add this to the features wishlist on the Alexandria wiki.
(Also, I will note that scanning a DVD disc to attempt to find
what it is would be much more hassle (and more time-consuming
for the user) than scanning its barcode and looking up its EAN.
Scanning the EAN of a CD would be quicker than a freedb or MusicBrainz
lookup too.) |
