REXML bails because google needs oe=utf-8 parameter to return utf-8

Detailed description 
geocoding: "C/ Mallorca, 1, Barcelona, Spain" throws an REXML error due to the special characters in the response
(not utf-8, though with a utf8 header??).

Adding the 'ue=utf-8' parameter in the #make_url method fixed this problem.
