That test is for a *FRAME* not an *IFRAME*. I remember adding the code 
to add the ability to access frames by ID over a year ago, for a mutual 
client in Madison. When i added that, i also added a comment saying 
"Does not work for IFRAMES". I don't recall the details regarding what 
exactly would be needed to make this work.

Hi,

 

i got a javascript generated popup menu which creates divs for the submenus
and tables for the topmenus.

I can access all the topmenus and submenus through the code below. You can
see the menus flashing

and the submenus opening but when i send the fireevent "onClick" or just
.click i only get a yellow blink

but no click response. The divs created by the popup creater are built like
this

The onclick method opens the new page the other scripts are just to open

  I took some liberties with your test and checked the files into svn.
Added id to iframes_test.html as you mentioned, changed the test to id
strings, and added it to frame_test.rb. Hope you don't mind and thanks
for the prodding. The test now fails with

I am having trouble using click_no_wait on buttons inside a frame.

 

Inside irb:

I got this win32 version of libarary from rubyforge.org and suppose
".so" is already pre-compiled library which I can simply drop in the
sub-directory of ruby where many other *.so files are location however,
I am getting following error messages:

 

C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/1.8/ftools.rb:59:in `stat': No such file or directory -
pipe.so (Errno::ENOENT)

            from C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/1.8/ftools.rb:59:in `syscopy'

Could anyone please help me how to install any ".so" ruby libraries

So a couple of things.  You might first consider the advice of the good
ftools folks "...consider using FileUtils as it is more comprehensive"

and fileutils is included in the standard Windows distro, i.e.:

Watir v. 1.5.1.1081

Windows XP pro.

 

 

Attaching my browser to "C:\ruby\lib\ruby\gems\1.8\gems\watir-1.5.1.1081\unittests\html\frame_buttons.html"

 

I am having trouble using click_no_wait on buttons inside a frame.

 

Inside irb:

irb(main):019:0> ie.frame("buttonFrame").button(:name,"b1").click

=> nil   

irb(main):020:0> ie.frame("buttonFrame").button(:name,"b1").click_no_wait

NoMethodError: undefined method `to_identifier' for nil:NilClass

I appreciate your response. I know watirmaker may not be very well
supported, but I want to draw attention to the errors happening here.
I may be using watirmaker, but I think the errors are because of
watir's lack of support in multi-frame sites using extensive
javascript. That is why I used the Google Calendar example. Please
look again at the original posting and checkout the DEBUG statements.
I think you'll find that they aren't specifically tied to watirmaker.
I have noticed a lot of problems with mutli-frame sites in postings as
well. Maybe this will shed some new light on the subject. Please let
me know if I am off track, and where, if you find that I am.

Hello Astha, you would do it in Ruby just about exactly as you have
suggested.

I would suggest a minor change to your data content though.  You should
either remove the final slash (/) from the first variable, or the first
slash from the second.  Otherwise your built-up URL will look like:

  $about_url = 'http://www.google.com//intl/en/about.html'     # the
double-slash in the middle is undesirable

Whenever you have doubt or want to play with some ideas, give them a try at
the Interactive Ruby (IRB) prompt.

That's pretty much it. You've got and ending slash and a beginning on
your strings which will make http://www.google.com//intl/en/about.html

Otherwise it seems fine, is there some problem you're encountering?

Thank you for your interest and concern for Watir. I have reviewed all 
the debug statements that you sent out and have read through the 
WatirMaker/WatirRecorder code. (Their new repostory, using the new name 
can be found at http://svn.openqa.org/fisheye. It's a shame they changed 
the name. WatirMaker just had a naughty ring to it. And recorders are 
naughty things.)

My reading is that these debug statements indicate events that 
WatirMaker is not recording. I have no idea why the WatirMaker 
developers are not recording these events. If it is because of a 
limitation they are aware of in Watir, then they should report it. 
WatirMaker does not "use" Watir, so without knowing the thinking of the 
developers it is hard to draw conclusions about Watir. I do not recall 
that they have reported any problems.

What you have done should work.  Did you give it a try?  Using "irb"
as shown below is often a good way to experiment with syntax to make

This link does not work for me. When I click it I get page with error:

Issue Navigator
Errors
* Could not getRequest search with this id.
The Issue Navigator allows you to browse all the issues in the system.
Filters allow you to limit the issues that you see.
Using the panel on the left, you can create and edit new filters.

Am I doing something wrong?

Clever code. My problem is slightly different. I am testing a product
that uses a web based GUI, by navigating to all GUI controls and
collecting data for validation comparisons. This product generates the
javascript alert windows to kindly prompt the user that some action has
been completed. They lock up the screen until something clicks the OK
button on the javascript alert window. I want to code the OK button
click for this window, which was opened by the product.

The results were the same, except the problem was with the id.

I also tried using the index method, but it couldn't find this image. I don't know if this image has an index?

Hi...

I'll probably end up asking this on ruby-talk, but figured I'd start here.

I have a script that load up a ginormous array and then sends it as a
message.  The whole set of data blows out the RAM on the machine it runs
on.  What I want to do is to clear the array every so many records,
repopulate the array with the next set of data, and then send that next
message, over and over.

I have some code like this:

         if send_array.include?(num)
        @result = @soap.sendMessage(ginormous_array)
        ginormous_array = []
      end #if

However, it seems that when I clear the array with "ginormous_array = []",
Ruby doesn't give back the memory it took loading it up in the first place.


Anyone have a suggestion of how to force Ruby to give back the memory for an
array that no longer contains any data?

You need to run the garbage collector. It is something like this:

  GC.start

You also need to make sure that you don't retain any references to any bits
of the array. Assign them to nil, or better, ensure they are out of scope.

maybe someone can help me or maybe someone can tell me where i can report
that bug. Because for me it seems like

this is a bug. No error is reported but i still only get a little blink and
no click which is very weird cuz i tried a simple

bug or i dont know. Doesnt look like ist

right.

The JavaScript Alert, Confirm, Prompt, Security, File Save, File
Download, File Upload, error message, and login (I think this is a
complete list but there may be others) are all a special type of modal
popup dialog window-there isn't a different one.   In order to handle
these types of popups you have to start another thread independent of
your $ie thread OR you have to not block the process by using
click_no_wait.

There are two ways (that actually both use the WInClicker).  The first
one is listed below that works with the older versions of Watir.  The
second (I have found after using them both) is more reliable than the
first but require you having a Watir version greater than 1079 because
of some fixes to click_no_wait (can't remember the exact version).  You
can get them here:

First method (works with Watir 1.4.x):

def jsAlert(button, waitTime = 3)
     w = WinClicker.new
     longName = $ie.dir.gsub("/" , "\\" )

This is good to know.  However, I didn't have to resort to using it.
Running the process overnight, reloading ginormous_array 5 times, it seems
that Ruby is re-using a lot of this memory.  My Ruby process is still
holding on to a lot of memory, but not nearly as much as loading the whole
set of data into a single array.

Sounds like you may be encountering the same thing I found when trying
to work with the google ajax tree - seems that the click event is
actually being handled at the window level and not the browser level (or
something along those lines) - so using onClick or .click through water
isn't the same.

I'm still messing with the problem described in that post

maybe someone can help me or maybe someone can tell me where i can
report that bug. Because for me it seems like

this is a bug. No error is reported but i still only get a little blink
and no click which is very weird cuz i tried a simple

version of that menu myself and it worked pretty well. So ist maybe a
frame bug or i dont know. Doesnt look like ist

right.

    This is good to know.  However, I didn't have to resort to using
    it.  Running the process overnight, reloading ginormous_array 5
    times, it seems that Ruby is re-using a lot of this memory.  My Ruby
    process is still holding on to a lot of memory, but not nearly as
    much as loading the whole set of data into a single array. 


Ruby will run the garbage collector automatically when it runs out of 
memory. You probably want to learn more about how Ruby allocates memory.

For example

 string << "addendum"

modifies an existing string, whereas

  string += "addendum"

creates a new one, thus using memory.

Little things like this starting becoming really important when you have 
large data sets.

ie.image(:src, "/images/SelectRow1.gif")

Eva, I take it that this image alters when you click on it, or gets all
funky due to the javascript.

I had the same problem with javascript toggling something open and
closed (different graphics)

You could also get an array of all the images in the page and click
on it by index

ie.images[1].click #or equivalent

thx for the help. I tried the execScript method but i got weird error.

 

When i checked it with
ie.frame("mainFrame").document.parentWindow.execScript("alert('TEST');")

It worked perfect but then i used
ie.frame("mainFrame").document.parentWindow.execScript("myfunction('TEST');"
)

And watir told me

 

Z:/Watir/scripts/frame.rb:44:in `method_missing': execScript
(WIN32OLERuntimeError)

 

Maybe you have an idea ? im done after checking the whole Watir Archieve for
similar problems and other local

tests. My boss is already looking for a similar software which is able to
handle this :/

Not sure why that would happen, the syntax looks identical.

But one thing to note is the way I've done this in the past and there's
a couple posts on the archives for this is to create the window object
as such:

window=ie.ie.document.parentWindow and then use window.execScript

So as you can see it seems that I have an extra layer here so to speak -
ie.ie...  I don't see that in your statements.

I noticed that too.  The "myFunction(TEST)" must be exhibiting some property
that Watir doesn't understand.   I have no idea what the property could be,
though.   The error msg isn't very helpful.  (Unless there's a stack trace
below that method_missing error that we haven't seen?)

I have been trying to use the second method described above with no success.

Matt,

The problem is that when the enabled_popup method was removed from 
watir.rb the definitions for GetWindows() definition wasn't moved with 
it.  Afterwards, the definition for GetWindows was moved in the watir.rb 
file so that it is no longer found by enabled_popup.

If you look in the watir.rb file for GetWindow and move those 
definitions into the enabled_popup.rb file then it should work fine.

Hi guys,

thx for the help. I wasnt able to answer at the weekend cuz i can only use
this mail at my work.

I already solved the problem. It was a very complex JS Popup and for some
reason some functions

did not create objects like the onclick method does but i fixed it ^^ my
boss is happy and so am i.

Not sure why that would happen, the syntax looks identical.

But one thing to note is the way I've done this in the past and there's a
couple posts on the archives for this is to create the window object as
such:

window=ie.ie.document.parentWindow and then use window.execScript

So as you can see it seems that I have an extra layer here so to speak -
ie.ie.  I don't see that in your statements.

thx for the help. I tried the execScript method but i got weird error.

 

When i checked it with
ie.frame("mainFrame").document.parentWindow.execScript("alert('TEST');")

It worked perfect but then i used
ie.frame("mainFrame").document.parentWindow.execScript("myfunction('TEST');"
)

And watir told me

 

Z:/Watir/scripts/frame.rb:44:in `method_missing': execScript
(WIN32OLERuntimeError)

 

Maybe you have an idea ? im done after checking the whole Watir Archieve for
similar problems and other local

tests. My boss is already looking for a similar software which is able to
handle this :/

Sounds like you may be encountering the same thing I found when trying to
work with the google ajax tree - seems that the click event is actually
being handled at the window level and not the browser level (or something
along those lines) - so using onClick or .click through water isn't the
same.

maybe someone can help me or maybe someone can tell me where i can report
that bug. Because for me it seems like

this is a bug. No error is reported but i still only get a little blink and
no click which is very weird cuz i tried a simple

version of that menu myself and it worked pretty well. So ist maybe a frame
bug or i dont know. Doesnt look like ist

right.

The problem is that when the enabled_popup method was removed from 
watir.rb the definitions for GetWindows() definition wasn't moved with 
it.  Afterwards, the definition for GetWindows was moved in the watir.rb

file so that it is no longer found by enabled_popup.

If you look in the watir.rb file for GetWindow and move those 
definitions into the enabled_popup.rb file then it should work fine.

I've written a method to allow idenfitication by tags other than the default :name :id, and also index objects based on a specific tag, not just a single index. 
The code is at the bottom of this message. 

For example, if I want to click on a link that has the word Edit in it's html properties I'd use the following :
ie.findElement(:links, :html, /Edit/).click

If I wanted to click on the second checkbox called "ToggleAll", I'd use the following:
ie.findElement(:checkboxes, :name, "ToggleAll", 2).click

I've found this is a good solution when there are multiple objects that share similar properties and when the only differentiating properties are in the .html attribute of the objects...

class IE
    def findElement(elementType, type, searchText, index=1)
        elements = self.send(elementType)
        count = 0

        for i in 1..elements.length
            if (elements[i].send(type).match(searchText) != nil)
                count += 1
            end
            if (count == index)
                return elements[i]
            end
        end

Looks like this may be a bug. Please report this in Jira. It would also 
help if you would report what  C:/ruby/mattj/scanmus/scanmus3.rb:79 
looks like.

The code you are using does not have have unit tests and is currently 
unsupported.

FWIW, I dunno about Ruby's GC, but with GC in things like Java and C#, 
I've heard that telling GC to start or run is really treated more as a 
hint, a prodding, but won't always give the same results, just due to

After reviewing the forum and trying various ways to access a list of links in a frame, I now ask here. Given a frame that appears to contain a list of links, how does one click on one of these links?

Using irb, I have tested variants on: ie.frame("fraDataZone").link(:text, "ADF").click
irb returns an UnknownObjectException: Unable to locate object, using text and AFD

I am guessing that I am dealing with a list of links, is there a way to verify this?

Hi, I understood that this was unsupported ( and undocumented ) code. I
appreciate the help getting this to work. I submitted this bug:

The fix seems simple.

Would you be interested in unit tests for this module? I am not confident of
my ruby skills at this point, but that might be a good exercise for me and
possibly helpful to you?

        $logger.log("Passed. Found test string 'Client' ")
        $logger.log_results("Employee Tests", "TEST PASSED.") #logs to both the XML file and corelogger
   rescue => e
        $logger.log("*FAILED*." + e.message + "\n" + e.backtrace.join("\n"))
       $logger.log_results("Employee Tests", "TEST FAILED.")  #logs to both the XML file and corelogger  
   end

I receive this error
*FAILED*.undefined method `assert' for main:Object


I tried putting the same script into one of the class methods that I'm using and have the same issue. I have require 'test/unit' in the script. Has anyone seen this issue before? 

I'm able to get assert to work when I'm not using classes. Also, I have no problem when using  if $ie.contains_text, else, end with the logger.

Thanks to other postings, I found a solution using irb which is extremely helpful.
0) irb
1) ie = Watir::IE.start("url of product")
2) ie = Watir::IE.attach( :title, / Product Title/)
3) ie.show_frames
4) ie.frame("frame-of-interest").show_frames
5) ie.frame("frame-of-interest").frame("nested-frame-of-interest").show_frames
6)  ie.frame("frame-of-interest").frame("nested-frame-of-interest")
                                            .frame(:index,1).span(:text,"list-value-of-interest").click
   Even though the items in the list appeared as links, the span class was the key to accessing the object of interest.

Thank you. I've committed the fix. You can either build your own gem 
from trunk or else wait for the next development gem (in say the next

There are two ways to do this.

1. Use verify instead of assert.

I've recently released a verify method, which is backwards compatable 
with 1.4. This works like assert, except that it does not abort a test 
case. However, using it will only result in a list of failures, not passes.

2. Dynamically create your test case methods.

What you will have to do is on the first pass (at load time), generate 
all your test case methods. These will then be executed. This is more 
complex, but will give you the results you request.

class MyTest < Test::Unit::TestCase
  100.times do | count |
      method_name = :"test_#{count}"
      define_method method_name do
        #each test is somewhat randomized
        assert_no_match(certain error)
      end
  end
end

Thanks. I will say I have had no apparent problems using win32ole functionality with the 1.8.4 version of Ruby I have installed -- not with Watir 1.4.1, nor with any of the 1.5.x builds. So...maybe I have just been lucky?

Thanks for the feedback.

I've also had trouble personally reproducing the errors reported using 
Watir 1.5 and Ruby 1.8.4/5. I was able to see problems only intermittently.

However, i also know what the coding error is and am somewhat surprised 
that the problem is so difficult to reproduce. I have received several 
different variations on the reported problem (an incompatability between 
our modified win32ole and the one included with Ruby).

Perhaps the problem shows up less frequently than i had expected.
