I have watir 1.5.1.1081 and it is not supported there.

irb(main):005:0> ie.link(:text, "link").index
NoMethodError: undefined method `index' for #<Watir::Link:0x2dcc6f0>

This looks like interesting feature request (maybe newer versions of watir
have this already implemented).
