From bret at pettichord.com Wed Dec 3 16:53:16 2003 From: bret at pettichord.com (Bret Pettichord) Date: Wed, 03 Dec 2003 15:53:16 -0600 Subject: [Wtr-general] test tool workshop Message-ID: <5.1.0.14.2.20031203154708.01e617a0@127.0.0.1> I'm co-hosting a workshop in January in Austin on open source test tools. You all know that my favorite test tool is WTR. I'll probably make sure it gets demo'd at the workshop, but since i'm the host, it might be better if i could get someone else to help out with the demo? Can any of you make the workshop? http://www.pettichord.com/awta5.html I think you all know that Brian Marick and i have been teaching people how to use IE Controller in one-day seminars. We taught two more in October (Portland Oregon & San Jose). I also demo'd it at several conferences in November (Austin, Wellington New Zealand, Melbourne Australia). It's a lot of fun and i've built a lot of helper functions and com-bug workarounds that i need to share with you all when i get a second. That Austin Conference was the Ruby Conference, BTW. Anyway, the more i show this to people, the more excited i get about it. I may be between contracts in January which will really let me get my code in order... Oh yeah, i plan to post some of the ruby bugs that i've seen to ruby-talk. Real soon now... One more thing.... Should we plan to do something with WTR for the XP Universe in Calgary. The deadline approaches.... But first: come to my workshop! Someone else is continuing with it now. In my current job, we have chosen to use Ruby in place of Silk for IE based web testing. We've also accomplished some testing of a serial device (like a modem) with Ruby. Most of the things I could do with perl, but the maintenance aspect of perl has always put me off using it. Ruby is a great language for testing. -----Original Message----- From: wtr-general-bounces at rubyforge.org [mailto:wtr-general-bounces at rubyforge.org] On Behalf Of Bret Pettichord Sent: 12 December 2003 13:56 To: wtr-general at rubyforge.org Cc: Brian Marick Subject: [Wtr-general] Fwd: IE Controller use Brian Marick asks... >Date: Thu, 11 Dec 2003 22:08:43 -0600 >Subject: IE Controller use >From: Brian Marick >To: Bret Pettichord > >I'm at XXX showing IE controller to someone. Been dinking again with the Mozilla control. Some cool news ... the author has a sample of the MozAxc control being embedded inside a web page and loaded in IE -- and via Ruby I can even access this embedded Mozilla control -- sort of :-) I can do something like: ie.document.all.MozCtl.navigate 'www.google.com' ... and the embedded mozilla control will navigate to Google. Very cool. But as soon as I want to access the document property to start working with its DOM, I get tripped up. The following: ie.document.all.MozCtl.document ... evaluates back to ie.document ... which makes sense when you think about it. ie.document.all.MozCtl inside Internet Explorer's DOM is an Object instance (Object being a tag just like Form or Button). Apparently, when calling .navigate on this instance, IE realizes the Object instance doesn't have its own .navigate method and passes it through to the ActiveX control itself. But when calling .document, IE realizes the Object instance does have its own .document method (a reference back to ie.document) and returns that, with nothing getting passed on to the ActiveX control. The WebBrowser docs say there's a GetProperty method which could be a way to work around this, force the .document call through ... but I can't get GetProperty to work. I've contacted the MozAxc author, but he's out of pocket until Jan 6th. -- Chris http://clabs.org/blogki From paul.rogers at shaw.ca Sat Dec 27 20:34:27 2003 From: paul.rogers at shaw.ca (Paul Rogers) Date: Sat, 27 Dec 2003 18:34:27 -0700 Subject: [Wtr-general] Mozilla Control update In-Reply-To: <3FEE2FDB.6010702@clabs.org> Message-ID: <000001c3cce2$bb75f190$6400a8c0@NewDell> Chris, This is awesome news - good job! Nothing big included, mostly just adminstrivia to get things comfy in their new home: * Builder and Installer working under new RubyForge src tree, etc. Woop. * waitForIE now sleeps so as not to suck up all CPU time. (thx to Brian Candler). * cl/util/version is now protected so if it doesn't exist the world rolls on without -- ain't that important. Thanks to Shashank Date for the bug report. * "Hello world" demo now included in the main file, just run it to see things in action. [WHOOPS - took this and moved to example directory...] * cleaned up the readme.txt some, and included it in the build * Source re-org and move to RubyForge.net/projects/wtr * Added mozaxc to cliec/contrib folder with some scripts to help tinker around with controlling the mozaxc ActiveX control embedded in a web page. * Added an example folder with sample code. -- Chris http://clabs.org/blogki From bret at pettichord.com Tue Dec 30 01:16:25 2003 From: bret at pettichord.com (Bret Pettichord) Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2003 00:16:25 -0600 Subject: [Wtr-general] Mozilla Control update In-Reply-To: <000001c3cce2$bb75f190$6400a8c0@NewDell> References: <3FEE2FDB.6010702@clabs.org> Message-ID: <5.1.0.14.2.20031230001003.034586c0@127.0.0.1> At 07:34 PM 12/27/2003, Paul Rogers wrote: >On a different note - are you going to the conference in Austin?
