Due to lack of time I'll post this as it is.] Dear VIT team, dear regular or occasional contributors, wouldn't we all like to report typos or provide translations via GitHub pull requests? I do!!! About one and a half year ago there have been efforts towards an "official port" of ruby-lang.org to a Jekyll-based and GitHub-hosted site, see discussions in August 2011. A GitHub project and a preview site have been created (see github.com/ruby/ruby-lang.org and ruby.github.com/ruby-lang.org/en). Since then nothing much happened... :( Seeing that various localized pages are still hopelessly outdated I really would like to contribute, and a GitHub based workflow is much more appealing to me than sending patches by mail. Please reconsider the value of such a project and contribute to the discussion and realization. I suggest that you do not answer on this mailing list but on the project's page, where I opened an issue, see github.com/ruby/ruby-lang.org/issues/30. Basically nobody knows, but I think I?ve seen Shugo Maeda (shugo at ruby-lang.org) performing administrative tasks every now and then. He seems to read this ML rarely, so your best option is probably to ask a question on the ruby-core mailing list (presumely ruby-dev would be even better, but we all know it?s Japanese). > I really think a revamped website would be nice as an extra ruby 2.0 > ? feature ? ! However, the preview page on GitHub doesn?t seem to work, the link http://ruby.github.com/ruby-lang.org always gives a 404. Hi, as far as I'm concerned I am not interested in an "overhaul" - meaning the design of the site - at all. I'm solely interested in a simpler process for contributing, which IMO could be achieved by a port to GitHub. I like the established design. Best regards, Marcus PS. We saw big community push for Ruby/Rails the last years as books/screencasts/tutorials/conferences/trainings/initiatives which is great. Now it's more easy to learn and practice Ruby than ever. We've got great projects/libraries and great people in the community. The thing that bothers me is that the entry point for new programmers - the website - was left behind. The current design of the website served it's purpose, but if we're going to change it it must be better. Some examples of new designs that 'temp' me start learning the language - http://kotlin.jetbrains.org/ - http://ceylon-lang.org - http://golang.org/ - http://www.dartlang.org/ - http://www.typescriptlang.org/ - http://fsharp.org/ - http://fantom.org/ - http://www.haskell.org - http://jessenoller.com/blog/2012/11/28/the-great-python-org-redesign So I as a user not designer will tell you what I don't like about the new design at http://ruby.github.com/ruby-lang.org/en/ 1. Even in the logo there is 'A happy programmer's language' I'm not sure that this is a website for programming language 2. The main focus is on the news. I don't care about the news if I'm new. 3. The most hooking thing in the current design is missing - that little snippet of code which shows the language. If I'm new I want to see instantly what it looks like programming in this language. 4. All other important things like downloads, introduction and materials are too small to see. No offense to the people that put their time into the redisgn but at the end it looks like that nobody cares about the web presence of the language. May be I've missed the discussions on the list, but I'm ready to work about this issues although I'm not a designer. I don't work in a company that have great designers willing to help. So you if guys have someone in mind, please ask them to help. Another thing: spread the word - I cannot afford to go to any conference but some of you can - ask people for help. This is my opinion, sorry for my broken english. Message-ID: <5117B096.7080104@web.de> Dear ruby-lang.org team, this is (again) an attempt to revive the discussion that followed Peter Cooper's blog post "The Official Ruby Site Is Proudly Maintained by No-One" (!) in August 2011 [1]. Some of the pages are still in the same bad shape as then (I particularly mean translated sites). Already in 2011 there had been some general consensus that a GitHub port would improve the situation and facilitate keeping track of changes and keeping the localized content up-to-date. At the moment there are two GitHub projects with different goals, one of them reproducing the current design and the other one with a proposal for a design "overhaul". For both of them there are previews: - http://ruby-lang.github.com/ (by postmodern) - http://ruby.github.com/ruby-lang.org/en/ (by chikamichi) In the last days, postmodern has put considerable effort into updating the content and implementing some missing features. I think his work would be a good starting point for a GitHub port. Considering the difficult and slow decision making process, a redesign (if necessary) should be postponed to a later time. To avoid getting contributions "lost" in this list's archives, I really would appreciate your contributions to the discussion on GitHub, see https://github.com/ruby/ruby-lang.org/issues/30.
