I believe the text is actually correct the way it is. The paragraph before the one you quoted says that Leopard supports Ruby 1.8.6 (it use to say 1.8.7, but I corrected it). Then your content comes in saying Tiger ships with 1.8.2, but you can get a more recent version without upgrading to Leopard. Thanks for double-checking though. Meanwhile I'm looking for signs that Ruby is great and my time and money learning it are both well spent. Went through this same thing several weeks ago, quietly, figuring it was a brief outage. So one might imagine it does not foster confidence when the top link at Ruby's download page: http://www2.ruby-lang.org/en/20020102.html ...to download Ruby: "The stable release ruby-1.8.5." ...is a bad link (404 Not Found). The link points to: ftp://ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/ruby-1.8.5.tar.gz With my Dick Tracy hat on, through ingenious internet sleuthing I find that the real download link is: ftp://ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/1.8/ruby-1.8.5.tar.gz And it has been wrong for many weeks. Hey, I'm just saying. Disclaimer: Fulfilling my duty of being snarky and offering a wake-up call to internet sleepy heads who so need a dope-slap. Like the time that 75% of the links on cpan.org (Perl's module library etc) were bad links. Their only responses to me were excuses and rationalizations, (such as, hey, it's hard to always get things right and people have busy schedules), plus anger at me (I was braced for that already), but ultimately they amazingly got it right and the world began to spin more true on its axis. I'd like to recommend to the folks at ruby-lang.org that they write a link-checker and run it via cron to insure their links are ok. They can write it in Perl where the links actually work. _______________________________________________ Uw-ruby mailing list Uw-ruby at zenspider.com http://www.zenspider.com/mailman/listinfo/uw-ruby -- Jordan Dobson Designer / Owner jordan.dobson at madebysquad.com ofc 206.622.0408 mbl 425.444.8014 aim thesquadjordan http://madebysquad.com http://gluenow.com http://merchsquad.com http://squadblog.com From james at grayproductions.net Sun Nov 9 00:28:36 2008 From: james at grayproductions.net (James Gray) Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2008 23:28:36 -0600 Subject: [Vit-core] Fwd: [Uw-ruby] Ruby download entertainment In-Reply-To: <82f879d00811081713j2d79af8cpafe9991da375bc9e@mail.gmail.com> References: <782E1C2948851B4FBC61DA6606740766019DCA7A52@EX-SEA5-D.ant.amazon.com> <29FBF29A528D4AD2B5056A0D2CFACB7A@GARYHA1> <82f879d00811081713j2d79af8cpafe9991da375bc9e@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <683D8B52-E64D-444E-8EA0-5891EE834C00@grayproductions.net> On Nov 8, 2008, at 7:13 PM, shugo at ruby-lang.org wrote: > Our class discovered a bad link on your site. > > The link to ruby-1.8.5 is not working. This effort will be much more sustainable over the long term if you put together a team of at least three people who would commit to translating and maintaining the site. We would need the names and email addresses of your team. Then I would add you and your team to the vit-core mailing list and we would create your logins on the site's CMS. I edit the pre-saved poem and then type print poem at the prompt but the original, unedited version appears and the tutorial does not progress. If I then type just poem at the prompt then the updated version (plus formatting) appears showing that the edit worked, but the tutorial still doesn't advance. Screenshot attached. Cheers. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <137133.89050.qm@web63105.mail.re1.yahoo.com> Hello. I am currently looking for an easy computer language to learn. I found Ruby through google and went to the website. I tried the tutorial and I think there is an error in one of the steps of the tutorial. It is the part where you are asked to change "toast" with "honeydew". You are asked to type poem['toast']= 'honeydew' then print poem. I have tried this and multiple other combinations of typing it. Just thought I'd let you guys know. Ps-If there is no error, then I'm a complete idiot and soory for wasting your time. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
