Providing a translation of the Ruby web site would have two parts: 1) the
initial translation of the current content, and 2) the ongoing maintenance
of the Italian version as new content and news items are added.

This effort will be much more sustainable over the long term if you put
together a team of at least three people who would commit to translating and
maintaining the site.

We would need the names and email addresses of your team. Then I would add
you and your team to the vit-core mailing list and we would create your
logins on the site's CMS.

About 6 months ago Raul Parolari contacted us about working on an Italian
translation, but he was not able to put together a team. Perhaps the two of
you could work something out.

BTW, the ruby-lang.org site is powered by the Radiant CMS (its a Rails app),
so you could also install Radient on your own machine and play around with
it if you wanted:

I was wondering if you could provide a rough estimation for the total number
of pages to be translated. Maybe I'm wrong, but except for the news section
it looks like there are not too many pages to be translated.

I understand where you're coming from: having at least three people
committing to the project would make sure that if someone is no longer be
able to contribute, the translation is not left unmaintained. However, I can
see some initial difficulties in finding other people able to help out at
this stage: as I said, at the moment I don't know any other Italian
interested in Ruby, but I do feel that having the main Ruby site translated
into Italian may help getting more people involved. It looks like a vicious
circle, I know...

Could I start translating some of the pages, even without having access to
the main site? Could you just send me page sources in Textile or whichever
markup you used for them, maybe?

I do know RadiantCMS, I was going to adopt it for my own website, but then I
went for Typo (I was looking for more blog-specific functionalities). I
tried playing around with the online demo a few times anyway. And yes, I
could install it on my local machine or on my server perhaps, if that can
help.

We've done teams of two, but three would be better.

I have a requirement for a fairly small project to build a simple company website using Radiant CMS. We already have some basic branding but would like something simple along the lines of the ruby-lang website. Obviously we would pay for this work.

 

It?s important that the site be build into Radiant for the following reasons:-

 

-          I?m an advocate of Ruby on Rails

-          We need to maintain the content ourselves 

-          I hate the bloated and weird PHP based offerings that are out there

 

Would you be able to recommend a suitable candidate for this work?

You need a web designer for this, not a programmer. Any decent web designer
should do (they wouldn't need to know anything about Rails).

Actually I was wondering if it would be possible for our (Indonesian) team
to have read only access to the global Ruby-Lang analytics profile as well.

By analyzing the global Ruby-Lang trends it may also be useful as feedback
to Indonesian section too, and also as a clue whether it's more effective to
have separate or consolidated Analytics profile. As Google Analytics provide
this as read-only access no security (other than the stats themselves)
should be compromised.

We love to code more, that's for sure, but probably having a clean and
optimized site also doesn't hurt :)

Dear Ruby-Lang maintainers,

We're having some issues regarding the Ruby web site (for _all_ 
languages) with the use of relative links and non-trailing-slash URLs. 
I'm not sure if this is a high priority issue but probably somebody is 
interested to propose a solution.

I believe this is a "problem" with Radiant's design. Maybe we should try 
to throw this into Radiant list...

This is not the fault of dead-link but it's an inherent attribute of 
URLs. This problem also still apply even if you use the uberlatest 
version of Firefox or any modern browser.

If you browse to http://preview.ruby-lang.org/id/community, the "parent" 
URL is http://preview.ruby-lang.org/id/. That means if there's a 
relative URL "hello/", it will open 
"http://preview.ruby-lang.org/id/hello". The EXACT same relative URL, if 
the page is being opened from 
"http://preview.ruby-lang.org/id/community/", will result in 
"http://preview.ruby-lang.org/id/community/hello" because the "parent" 
URL is "http://preview.ruby-lang.org/id/community/".

The 'solution' is to mimic Apache standard directory listing's behavior. 
If we open a publicly browsable directory that's served by Apache, if we 
go to URL:
http://example.com/some/dir

Assuming 'dir' is a directory, Apache will automatically "redirect" the 
URL to:
http://example.com/some/dir/

Thus, the page will be displayed whichever URL the user uses (or types), 
and the relative links inside that page will still always work.

This is testable even on the long-standing English Ruby-Lang website, 
just visit the following URL:

http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/community

Then click any link on the _content_* page, for example Ruby User 
Groups. Your browser will tell you that the URL is 
"http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/user-groups/" and if you insist to click 
it, well you're gonna get an Oops. (* the sidebar links etc. are using 
absolute URLs, hence are not affected by this problem)

(Yohanes, I'm sending this to vit-core because I've verified this 
problem and this problem occurs in all languages on Ruby-Lang, not only 
Indonesian's)

We would be so glad to hear any ideas / proposed solutions / 
workarounds... or we can just leave it as it is now as it seems to be 
not causing any harm (?) (unless someone checks the log for 404s in 
ruby-lang's server) ;-)

So, although the pages look similar, they are actually
different. Specifically, the links in
http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/community and
http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/community/ are different.

But this does not invalidate what I said earlier that client must
consider trailing slash as significant. There is no page in
ruby-lang.org that has the link:
"http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/community" (without the trailing slash),
so it is not possible to obtain that URL programmatically except if
the client ignores the RFC like what dead-link.com did.

Now, whether or not treating with and without trailing slash cases
differently is the right thing to do is another topic.

I agree with you that the server should have treated both cases
similarly. It's annoying because when someone manually types in the
address without the trailing slash, like I usually do, they get to a
visually indistinguishable but incorrect page. I know which page is
incorrect, visitor won't.

collection of illustrations and advice that suggest a way to change your
 entire outlook on life and, in the process, open up a new realm of 
possibility.
If you fail to  find the value of the new idea then you will not develop
it any further.

The intellectual foundation for this  double disaster is simple.

Sergey Tikhonov (<st at dairon.net>) is already working on a Russian
translation, so you should talk to him about joining his team.

Providing a translation of the Ruby web site to Esperanto would have two
parts: 1) the initial translation of the current content, and 2) the ongoing
maintenance of the Esperanto version as new content and news items are
added.
This effort will be much more sustainable over the long term if you can put
together a team of two or three people who would commit to translating and
maintaining the site.

We would need the names and email addresses of your team. Then I would add
you and your team to the vit-core mailing list and we would create your
logins on the site's CMS.
