I'm a Ruby novice - I've played with Ruby off and on for a few years but never written anything beyond a few toy applications. I'm interested in the model you guys have (heard about it via Sean Carley at the STL Ruby group) and I was wondering if it was still active. It didn't look like there'd been any posts in January so I didn't know if you'd closed up shop. Sounds like a great way for me to pick up some of the Ruby idioms. Achievable. If a project is too large, the start up cost inhibits productivity in short bursts. 2. Understandable. Complex code presents too many difficulties to new participants who do not have long term ownership in mind. This prevents newbies from working on it and non-newbies from committing to it. 3. Stagnant. Code that is being actively developed does not need our love. We want to help clean up or improve and leave an indelible stamp on the project. (Yes, we have egos too.) 4. Useful. Personally, I want to improve code that others are going to want, to use and to appreciate. I would like to see us improve the Ruby community as a whole through our efforts. Think of this as volunteerism for geeks and we don't want to waste time volunteering for an organization that does not get anything useful done. I don't believe any of our projects so far have met all of these criteria but I do believe if one does, we will do great things with it. It's probably a bit late in the game (submissions are due Thursday), but there are any number of little libraries that could be ported. I was actually thinking that it would be good to pick up any submissions that needed further polish and adopting them. Perhaps we could do one a week for a bit just to get some momentum. (Second response, sorry) I do have a couple of ideas that might be fun to work on though ... RubyInline::Fortran RubyInline::Haskell RubyInline::OCaml (zenspider would like to see this one ... maybe he'd help) (not really ports, but extensions of RubyInline, which is the analog of the scary capable Perl::Inline) Gedcom a bunch of libraries in the Games:: space Astro::Sunrise (or maybe the emacs calendar conversion stuff) Quantum::Superpositions > > Sean > > _______________________________________________ > Therps-discuss mailing list > Therps-discuss at rubyforge.org > http://rubyforge.org/mailman/listinfo/therps-discuss > > -- thanks, -pate ------------------------- From seanacarley at gmail.com Tue Jan 31 17:33:27 2006 From: seanacarley at gmail.com (Sean Carley) Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 16:33:27 -0600 Subject: [RPS] Ruby Quiz #64 - Port a Library In-Reply-To: <6fd0654b0601311325p3d9f9fbej168e4f84ba6d64da@mail.gmail.com> References: <9e272eff0601311302v5adb797dv8e43d81c4627905f@mail.gmail.com> <6fd0654b0601311325p3d9f9fbej168e4f84ba6d64da@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <9e272eff0601311433p3cb6dac5l1f036d31d00431f5@mail.gmail.com> Pat, I would love to do extensions to RubyInline but they feel slightly over our heads at the moment. Lets put them on the schedule for next project. Anything in the Games space sounds like a lot of fun. Any ideas in particular? Do you have languages for the other libraries you mentioned?
