From morgajel at gmail.com Tue Aug 21 23:00:12 2007 From: morgajel at gmail.com (Jesse Morgan) Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2007 23:00:12 -0400 Subject: [Ruma-team] Team Introductions Message-ID: <301383980708212000s34eddc9k7e65b4e7c3ce2725@mail.gmail.com> Alright guys, we have as many responses as I think we're gonna get. So lets do some team Introductions- I'll go first. I'm Jesse (morgajel), and I've been writing Ruby off and on since 2003. I'm also part of the Luma team, which is what Ruma is modeled after. I created Ruma for two reasons: 1) get some fresh input on how to design an application like Luma 2) I suck at python (which is what Luma is written in) I'm comfortable writing Ruby, Perl, PHP, Bash, and have been known to hack at java, C, and python. I'm currently a Linux sysadmin near Detroit, MI who uses LDAP on a daily basis. I've been using qtruby for a while, and have used different LDAP libraries for different languages. I'm a big fan of Subversion and unit tests, so expect to see me use them extensively. What I'd like to know about you guys is the following: Who are you? Where are you from? What do you do for a living? How long have you been a developer? How long have you written Ruby, if ever? What do you hope to get out of this project? What ideas/skills do you bring to the table? I'm thinking that probably next week I'd like to gather as many of you together in #ruma on freenode to try and brainstorm a bit. I haven't set a time, but I'm thinking 9pm Eastern on monday the 27th. I'll confirm this in a day or two. Look forward to hearing from you all. -Jesse -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I learnt ruby 6 months ago,I used it as the language of my daily programming, all the process is joyful. I like this language,so I am always thinking of contributing for ruby and ruby users as I once got help from them as well.I have never participated any real projects,so maybe all the things related with them are fresh to me. Through this project,I hope I can: 1.know more techniques/knowledge about ruby 2.learn to work on Linux 3.know how the (open source)project runs 4.gain the confidence from a sucessful beginning. I didn't think out any ideas. But I really, really think the test is crucial in development, for I really benefit from this in the XP practice hold by my college this summer. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am Ilango Gurusamy from Troy, Michigan. A somebody right now in Java and Ruby development, but hopes to change all that. Where are you from? I am Asian Indian by descent. I now live in Troy, Michigan. What do you do for a living? I work as a software developer. How long have you been a developer? I have been a developer for the last 17 months How long have you written Ruby, if ever? Never have. What do you hope to get out of this project? My hope for this project is to be able to be leader in my own right. How would I do that? I hope to make substantial contributions to this project over time. Ultimately I hope to be able to work within a team learning and imparting real-world skills for software and people. What ideas/skills do you bring to the table? More than a familiarity with Core Java APIs, JDBC, Data Access Objects, WebLogic Server, XML, Eclipse, CVS, Subversion, exposure to Suse Linux, solid written and spoken skills, and a keenness to work with people (and learn from them) in understanding and translating real world requirements into code. thanks ilango --------------------------------- Yahoo! oneSearch: Finally, mobile search that gives answers, not web links. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I started tinkering with Ruby on Rails about 2 months ago. What do you hope to get out of this project? I hope to raise the level of my Ruby knowledge. I feel the best way to do that is to be part of a team where my code will be reviewed. I have never used QT4 so I'm excited to work with that. What ideas/skills do you bring to the table? Aside from the technical skills I've gained I've been fortunate enough to work at several start-ups. The success and, more importantly, the failures I've experienced have provided me with some insight on what it takes to make it on a small team. I'm also a big believer in Agile Software Development. To switch to the 0.5 branch, simply move to your currently checked out version and run: svn switch svn+ssh://developername at rubyforge.net/var/svn/ruma/branches/ruma-0.5 you can switch back to the trunk with: svn switch svn+ssh://developername at rubyforge.net/var/svn/ruma/trunk all changes made in this branch will be merged back into the trunk as we go. Message-ID: <301383980708281405w3200b046q4939a88c051b5701@mail.gmail.com> Well, I'd say that was probably the most successful job posting I've ever seen- I got so many responses on the rubyNoobs job opening that I'm marking it as filled- everyone say hi to Johan Pretorius and Rene Paulokat- the last two noobs to join. We're up to 17 people now- lets try to keep it that high. For now I'm going to have us focus on getting this group up and running with development environments and getting comfortable with both Ruby and Ruma. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, feel free to share them. I'd also like to keep a running tab of who has working environments (capable or running ruma), as well as what extra steps were needed if it's not running on *buntu. So... who's got a working dev environment? If you haven't yet introduced yourself to the list, check out the ruma-team archives on how to do it: http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/ruma-team/2007-August/thread.html Also wanted to let the new guys know about the next team meeting- everyone should have received an invite at this point- if not, let me know. Lastly, what do you guys want to learn or discuss? Feel free to ask questions about Ruma, Ruby, LDAP, QT4, etc. -Jesse -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I think patches might be the best/only option; I think the quit() in MainWindow was a case where I planned on just doing a close(), but wasn't sure if I wanted to do any other sanity checking before that. I think we can probably switch quit() to close() in that connect and and remove the slots entry above that. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Programming Ruby: the Pragmatic Programmer's Guide - commonly called the pickaxe book because it has a pickaxe on it. It really is required reading for ruby programmers- it's not only the definitive resource for learning ruby, but it's a well written book. You can read a chapter in a day for a few weeks and get the a strong grasp of ruby. The pickaxe book can be found in your local bookstore as well as online: http://www.rubycentral.com/book/ (appears to be down at the moment) For a more handy reference, check out these versions: http://whytheluckystiff.net/ruby/pickaxe/ http://phrogz.net/ProgrammingRuby/ They have handy glossary/reference features. If you're looking to spend more money, I also suggest the Ruby Cookbook. It's full of clear 10-line examples that you would take you five times as many lines of code to write. It helps the learning process watching someone use features you may not have been aware of. A good example is the .nil? object method. Coming from the perl world, I simply wrote "if object == nil", but later found an example of "if object.nil?" in the cookbook. I've been using nil? ever since. How about some online API references? I keep the following close at hand because they're used often: http://www.ruby-doc.org/core/ This is the core documentation for ruby- just remember that the search feature of your browser is your best friend. http://www.ruby-doc.org/stdlib/libdoc/test/unit/rdoc/ I use this mainly to see what kinds of asserts are available for my unit tests- If you're new to unit testing, click on Test::Unit in the middle column at the top for a really nice introduction. http://onestepback.org/software/flexmock/ flexmock is the mock object of choice for our testing- This is the first time I've used flexmock, and I'm really new to mock objects as a whole. This is really useful for writing unit tests when you want a complex object to behave a certain way. Right now I'm writing unit tests for lib/uiclasses/ServerWidget- it requires ServerWidget to have a ServerManager which looks up a Server which returns a list of base DNs. Rather than build all of that, I insert a flexmock ServerManager which will always return the value I'm looking for- Now I don't have to rely on an actual server existing to test this gui component. http://doc.trolltech.com/4.1/classes.html This isn't really a Ruby reference, but it's still very helpful. Most of their examples are given in C++, but it quickly becomes second nature to translate it to ruby. If in doubt, check Ruma to see if it's been done, or just ask the team. #qtruby on freenode is also very helpful if you have questions about functionality, or even if you find a bug in qtruby itself. http://www.ruby-doc.org/stdlib/libdoc/rexml/rdoc/ ( http://www.ruby-doc.org/stdlib/ ) Rexml is a fairly decent xml parser for ruby. It takes a little getting used to, but since all of our configs are in xml, it's worth getting to know. This, like unit/test is part of the standard library- there are lots of things in there you can play with, but these two are the most important. http://del.icio.us/morgajel/ruby ("My ruby bookmarks; let me show you them.") I find all sorts of useful things on the net, and when I do I stuff them in here- tagged, bagged and ready to go. Not only does it let me keep way more bookmarks than I would the conventional way, but I can tag them for easy retrieval later. Delicious also gives me the ability to take my bookmarks anywhere, and allows me to share them with you guys. I highly suggest setting up an account and adding myself and each other to your networks so you can share bookmarks. Alright, that's all I have for now. -Jesse -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
