thanks,

gcc version is as follows - could this be the issue?:
[root at home ruby-1.8.7-p72]# gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc/i386-redhat-linux/3.4.6/specs
Configured with: ../configure --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info --enable-shared --enable-threads=posix
--disable-checking --with-system-zlib --enable-__cxa_atexit
--disable-libunwind-exceptions --enable-java-awt=gtk
--host=i386-redhat-linux
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-9)
[root at home ruby-1.8.7-p72]#

The irb test seems good:
[root at home local]# irb
irb(main):001:0> require 'yaml'
=> true
irb(main):002:0> a = [1,2,3]
=> [1, 2, 3]
irb(main):003:0> puts a.to_yaml
---
- 1
- 2
- 3
=> nil
irb(main):004:0>

It seemed to compile syck ok:
