My PC's have mostly been craigslisted, so I haven't tried it myself, but I'm curious as to what's happening: are you getting an error of some kind, or is it just refusing to do anything? Have you tried Webrick to see if it will work? Looking at the Camping handler that comes with Mongrel, it looks like it only handles static files if they're X-SENDFILE'd - could that be the issue? -- Nathaniel Talbott <:((>< From curtismitchell at gmail.com Fri Sep 21 09:07:01 2007 From: curtismitchell at gmail.com (Curtis Mitchell) Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2007 09:07:01 -0400 Subject: [raleigh.rb] Camping with Windows In-Reply-To: <4ce336a20709210522y1b656bbelfaac0075b95dd55e@mail.gmail.com> References: <4ce336a20709210522y1b656bbelfaac0075b95dd55e@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: I used Why's suggested method of serving static files ( http://code.whytheluckystiff.net/camping/wiki/ServingStaticFiles). I get a "File Not Found" error when I try to access a static file directly e.g. http://localhost:3301/static/style.css. I was able to get it working with Webrick last night. That is useful for now. I don't have any experience (yet) configuring Apache to proxy some requests to Mongrel. I guess I would use Apache for the static content at that point. There is a ticket in the Camping Trac system. The ticket was deferred to the Mongrel bug tracking system. There is a patch, but it did not solve the problem for me. One (maybe useful) thing I noticed is that the path that gets set in the X-Sendfile header on Windows is something like C:/camping/static/style.css. I thought the "/" should be "\" on Windows, but that didn't fix it either. Is it possible to step through the code and inspect variables as it executes using something like Ruby Debug? I'm doing a major upgrade on a pre-existing 1.1.6 app, moving it to 1.2.3 and fixing a bunch of bugs. This is a pretty funky application for several reasons, not the least of which is that a lot of the controllers have nothing to do with Models, in the active record sense, but are just managing things on the filesystem, which results in funky URLs needing custom routes. an example would be : map.connect 'cache/image/:id/:filename', :controller => 'cache', :action => 'send_image' which (once) worked to find a image named :filename in the :id folder and return it inline via send_file... I dumped out my routes via a rake task I google-d up, and the appropriate one looks right : ANY /cache/image/:vbid/:filename/ {:controller=>"cache", :action=>"send_image"} Sadly, it's not working - and is giving a vague reason : ActionController::RoutingError (no route found to match "/cache/image/1234/xyz_01.jpg" with {:method=>:get}): /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-1.13.3/lib/ action_controller/routing.rb:1292:in `recognize_path' The files in question are not in a web-accessible directory, so this function is to make them viewable. However, it's not a simple problem of missing image files. For one, they are in the correct place. Secondly, file existences is irrelevant because the route is unrecognized, so the send_image function never gets called. I find Rails routing to be pretty opaque; so all I've been able to do munge it via trial and error. What I am asking for, is some idea how to better determine what is happening during route recognition.
