Message-ID: <20051119111927.GF9776@hal.void.org> Hi all, Just a quick mail to indicate that I've introduced a new localization mechanism in order to ease the work of translators. For the time being it's on rubyforge CVS, in the wpgtr-intl module (instead of the wpgtr). I do not know if why is planning to use it/move it to subversion, but I think that it could help the work of translators. To start a new translation you'll need to create 2 files: the YAML file for the book, as well as a ruby file for the localization object. Let's suppose I want to translate the book to French. I will create the files: - poignant-fr.yml: with translation of the book, using the same YAML markup as the original book (renamed poignant-en.yml by the way) - localization-fr.rb: this file contains the following stuff: Localization.add( 'fr' ) { next_page "suivante" previous_page "pr?c?dente" encoding 'ISO-8859-15' locale 'fr' turn_page 'Tournez la page' header_title 'Le guide (poignant) de why vers ruby' } i.e all the local stuff needed by the Erb files. Then by calling: rake fr ../poignant-site I'll generate the HTML pages for the French translation in ../poignant-site/fr. Note that calling rake all will create all localizations in (i.e. /en , /fr ... Hope it will ease the tasks of the translators. By the way the 1st 3rd chapters of the French translation are available in the CVS (I did not yet find tile to publish them on my site in the nice way). And, also, he's done work to restructure the book to make it easy for translators to contribute. His work is really paying off, I am indebted to him. The current state of his French translation is up at: http://fr.poignantguide.net/ == How to Start a Translation == If you'd like to pitch in, here's how: 1. Check out the (Poignant) Guide from the repository. (You must have Subversion[1] installed.) svn co http://code.whytheluckystiff.net/svn/poignant/trunk poignant cd poignant 2. The English translation is in the `lang-en' directory. The French translation is in the `lang-fr' directory. Each of these directories contains two files: poignant.yml: The complete text of the book, stored in YAML[2]. localization.rb: A few language-specific settings (such as character encodings.) 3. If you'd like to start a new translation, add a new directory next to the English and French directories. For example, a German translation based on the original English would go like this: cp -r lang-en lang-de svn add lang-de You should use the ISO 639-1 code for your language. [3] If there is no 639-1 code, use the 639-2 one. 4. Once you are done editing, check in your work. If you've never checked into my repository before, get an account at: http://code.whytheluckystiff.net/ You will need to use your Rubyforge account. If you don't have one, hit: http://rubyforge.org/. Check in your work by running `svn commit' inside the top `poignant' folder. 5. After an hour or so, you should see your work published to the draft domain for your language. Using German as the example again: http://de-draft.poignantguide.net/ Please save your work frequently, even mid-sentence if you need. No one expects the drafts to be complete or sensible at all. 6. Once you're ready to publish your changes to your language's domain, update the version number in your language's localization.rb file. If you have just finished translating up to chapter 4, I'd suggest using version '0.4' as the number. Then, let's say you get partway through chapter five. Use '0.4.1'. Once again, run `svn commit' and the changes will then appear at http://fr.poignantguide.net/. -- Still left to be done: list the translations on the (Poignant) Guide cover page. Talking about that, I just upgraded the latest version of Ruby from
1.8.2 to 1.8.3, in the en, de and fr versions of the book.

I'm not sure if this should be done.
1.8.3 is not the latest version, but just a development branch, isn't it?

on dec 24 we will have 1.8.4 from Santa Matz; this could be a better point to
update this.

what do you think?

happy translation!

From the ruby-lang.org homepage, the latest stable release is 1.8.3
... So I think it's the latest one.

Yep ... We can be proactive and update to 1.8.4 ... I'm not sure I'll
have terminated my translation by Christmas, so, you're right we can
replace the version with 1.8.4 *in the translations*. IMHO the original
one should stick to the 1.8.3 (or 1.8.2)

| happy translation!

Happy translation to you too ;) and nice job for you're highlighting
