My name is Kornelius Kalnbach from Berlin, Germany, called murphy on the web and on Rubyforge. The day I discovered the (poignant) Guide I was finally convinced that Ruby was not only my language, but also my community. It's crazy and mind-blowing, and it reminded me instantly of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, one of my favorite books. So I started to translate W(p)GtR into German two weeks ago and now that I've just finished the first two chapters, I feel sure enough to make it open to the public :) But first, I want to get the OK from the others working on W(p)GtR, especially the author himself. The title is "Why's (ergreifende) Einf?hrung in Ruby". You can see the latest version here: http://ruby.cycnus.de/ergreifende_einfuehrung I also changed the erb-templates and poignant.rb (cool code!) a bit, so words like "Turn Page" are translated centrally in the poignant.yml. I couldn't find another. So if there is one, I'd love to read about it :) - Licenses are not really my hobby...I hope I am allowed to do this? - What do I have to know for my translation? You make take liberties in the translation, to embellish any of the words, and to alter cartoons in anyway you feel would enhance your translation. You are the first to attempt translation. Which is very brave, since I am changing parts of it. But I will let you know what I change and I will try to keep my changes down. (Most of my changes are code changes.) I already thought about how to redraw the comics...buying a drawpad etc. But this is way better! It's surely the dream of every illustration translator that the illustration mangaka draws the translation himself. That would be like Patrick Steward speaking K?pt'n Picard in German Star Trek... Could you also render a translated version of poignant.guide.png and poignant.guide.down.png? The German edition should be on Rubyforge, too...what would be better: * an own site for die (ergreifende) Einf?hrung (named poignant-german) or * a second download/CVS module available on the poignant-guide project site? I think an extra project site would be better, since it is it's own project (as long as I'm still translating older chapters) and should have it's own releases and news. If I'm keeping up the current translation speed, I'm done on October 28th 2005 (says irb). So maybe it's finished this year. Could be an excellent time filler for boring lectures... In the U.S., some splinter groups play games of Monopoly where the tax money (and anything else payed to the city) is placed under the square marked "Free Parking." But why do they place it under Free Parking? It's a public parking lot that generates no revenue for the city. I'm implying that its some kind of corruption, a kind of extortion, to keep the city's money underneath this parking structure. The phrase "begin to see the end of" means to see premonitions of the death of a group of people. I guess I'm hoping that if people begin to take Monopoly money seriously, then this type of extortion will end. Of course, it's all a gross exaggeration. Other English phrasings could be: "Hopefully this will put a stop to the racket underneath the Free Parking square, to those who keep city funds under its quiet pavement." "And I trust that keeping city funds under the innocence of the Free Parking square will die away.
