The room is open from 7.00pm and I'll be around from then if anyone wants to arrive early for an informal chat and coffee before hand. But I think the meeting proper starts at 7.30pm. Guest speaker is: Gilbert Cockton, Research Chair in Human-Computer Interaction and Chair of Interactive Digital Media in CAT - the School of Computing and Technology at the University of Sunderland. He will talk to us about his current work on a NESTA fellowship on value-centred design. See you tomorrow, should be good, I'm looking forward to it. For those not in the know, it's a wonderful tool that lets you write (what used to be crazily complicated and difficult) AJAX calls and behaviours with one or two lines of ruby code. 8.45 onwards is Gilbert Cockton's spot. He's got around 30 minutes of slides on 'Enabling Designed Value, implications for web design', following up with an interactive session, which should be fun. Then, of course, for those interested, we'll be heading off to a pub to finish off the night. Hope to see you all there, Sam P.S. I've also made some exciting developments with Newcastle College, who are interested in Ruby and Rails as upcoming technologies. Although it's too early to say, it potentially could mean that we might get the ability to record, produce and distribute our talks. This is something that sd.rb already does (http:// podcast.sdruby.com/), and is something that we should be looking to emulate. There might also be potential to use their award winning facilities for future events, etc. It's an exciting time to be interested in Ruby and Rails in Newcastle :-) From johnnybutler7 at gmail.com Wed Dec 13 09:32:00 2006 From: johnnybutler7 at gmail.com (John Butler) Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2006 14:32:00 +0000 Subject: [ncl.rb] tomorrow's meeting Message-ID: <3131fd1a0612130632v77337da3sfccbbba556193116@mail.gmail.com> Sam, Do you still need me to do s demo on RJS? Will there be enough time after the value-centred design? Good news about Newcastle College. I wont be able to make it this month, hopfully next months meet. Thanks for the e-mail from working with rails site about the list, I had found the list before I found the working with rails site, I just thought I'd keep my head down for the moment till I had time to contribute. If anyone wants a copy of Gilberts slides he left the presentation on my laptop and i can forward them on. Something we talked about last month was re-developing nruug website, i may have some spare time to create a site so we can post latest news/presentations/sample code/discussions/plugins/Jobs etc. If anyone else is interested in helping not just with coding but the design/layout/graphical side it would be a big help. I could probably get the site hosted for free. Whats the current site created in? Could you forward the images used on the site? We never got to discuss the newcastle college involvement last night, if you could keep us updated on developments. Early in the New Year I shall be starting on the development of an equivalent to ActiveRecord for NativeXML databases & XQuery. This will be in similar vein to things like ActiveLDAP and ActiveRDF. At the moment I'm not sure exactly where I'll start, but nothing ventured ... Would anyone like to partner me in this endeavour? I intend to release as a plugin to Rails core, but that is pretty obvious I guess. I also think it would be a good chance to 'get a name' and really get your head around 2 technologies with legs : Rails and XML. This is inspired by me asking myself why I was battling with modelling hierarchical data structures in relational databases when XML can do it for me. There are a number of open source NativeXML databases in the market including eXist and Berkeley DB XML. Anyone interested speak to me at the next meeting on the 11th (I think). Happy Christmas Jason
