Performance characteristics _can_ be part of a specification. The hard 
part is choosing good benchmark boundaries, since this greatly depends 
on the environment the tests run in.

It wouldn't really count as a unit test, since it's not always 
reproducable. I would see it more as a sort of sanity check.
