[Nitro] mod_proxy and 404's

My setup is: Apache using mod_proxy to proxy to Nitro run under
Mongrel.  I have Apache logging requests as per normal, and most
things are 200's.  How can I get my error action/page to return 404
back to mod_proxy, so I can see 404 in my Apache logs (for log
analysis, etc.)?

I've tried all manner of
@header = ...
@context.status = 404
@context.response_header...

And Apache continues to report it as a 200.
