Consider the icons idea as a separate suggestion to this patch.

I would be extremely surprised if anyone who tried this patch (not  
the icons) did not think it should be in Nitro but if this is the  
case, it doesn't alter the API or core so I'm relaxed about the  
general public using it - or not.

If you already were referring to the just the icons, the way I  
envision them would not be intrusive. If this separate icons patch  
ever materializes, should you disagree and after seeing how they sit  
in the template and found their implementation to be intrusive, we  
would add an option to enable/disable them (with the default state  
being drawn from general consensus).
