It's described in the HTTP/1.1 spec
http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec8.html#sec8.2.3

curl uses it by default:

There are several uses of them in the Rainbows! test cases:

$ git clone git://git.bogomips.org/rainbows
$ grep HTTP_EXPECT rainbows/t/*.ru
