So I will outline the steps for you to check. And yes, I love using NVU to WYSIWYG pages, but unfortunately it outputs invalid xhtml, like putting
or tags without the closing /> . Maybe I should look into patching that myself, so we wouldn't have these problems. There is a setting in the preferences that says save xhtml but it doesn't seem to do anything, arrgggh. I also wish that I could make it easier for having tidy automatically installed, I'll put that as a todo item as well, to see if I can make that easier or automatic. Anyway back to the problem. Since NVU makes invalid pages, one can either run them through tidy manually or have masterview do it when it is reading the file. The second way is preferred so that you don't have to keep doing the extra manual step. To properly configure masterview to use tidy, check that these steps have been taken. 1) Install Tidy and verify operation (sounds like you have done this) 2) edit your config/masterview/settings.rb and set the config parameter config.default_parser_options = { :tidy => true, :escape_erb => true } or config.default_parser_options[:tidy] = true # this way simply toggles on tidy 3) also in settings.rb, set the tidy path to point to your tidy library or exe so uncomment one of these (use first on unix/linux/mac, second on windows) and be sure to specify the path or in the case of the windows exe make sure that tidy is in your path, you can add the tidy bin path to your PATH system variable or copy tidy to somewhere like c:\windows\system32 which is already in the path. You can verify by pulling up a command prompt, cd to your rails app, and try typing tidy to see if it finds your path. The documentation says for windows to point the tidypath to the windows exe, however it turns out that doing this gives the same error that Robin identified. You must instead point it to the tidy DLL, which can be installed separately from the exe it is available from http://dev.int64.org/tidy.html (the standard binary download tidy). You will need the tidy.dll.zip not the tidy.exe.zip. Extract this to a directory and then update your config/masterview/settings.rb to point to this dll like so config.tidy_path = 'c:/tidy/bin/tidy.dll' # Win32 Also you would need to enable tidy parser option (also in that settings file) config.default_parser_options = { :tidy => true, :escape_erb => true } or config.default_parser_options[:tidy] = true Now Tidy should work as advertised, cleaning up invalid xhtml (like that generated from NVU). I apologize for the improper information, this was something I hadn't tested on windows since I do most of my work on linux. I will try to make sure to test more on windows going forward. However if that is not the obvious solution then, the answer to your question is yes, that you can uninstall the latest gem if necessary. It is also possible to reference a specific gem by version in the require (using require_gem) however unininstalling the latest gem is easiest. I will be glad to work with you further if you find that indeed this is bug and not simply a URL typo. PS. I have a bookmark/toolbar link to it so it shouldn't have changed. I double checked it again. I also double checked my environment and settings.rb and they are ok, again no change. Both my Masterview based projects no longer work from the Rails Admin page. The Rake tasks work ok. It definitely still works on another computer with the previous MV gem version. Same code checked out from the repository. These new restriction prevents the MasterView administration pages to be automagically loaded by enabling the configuration option as they were in the past (since they did not exist in the normal rails app tree). MasterView will still function properly without admin pages, but this aspect was nice for visualization and maintenance. The MasterView rake tasks can still provide similar functionality from the command line. (use rake -T to see all the options or refer to docs). A quick fix to get admin pages up and running again is to copy the MasterView admin pages controller, view code into the normal app tree. To make this easier (especially for gem users), I have created a tar.gz file with the appropriate files. You may simply extract this into your rails web application directory and MasterView admin pages will be functional once again. However extracting these files bypasses the enable_admin_pages configuration option so it will no longer control whether the admin page functionality is available, and as such if these files are installed the functionality is available. We are also looking at additional approaches to this issue and will release a maintenance release as soon as ready. In the meantime users can either extract the tgz file into rails web application directory or simply use the command line rake commands as an alternate option ('rake -T' for list of commands or refer to documentation). Admin pages temporary fix - to restore admin page functionality 1) download http://masterview.org/downloads/MasterViewRails116AdminPages.tgz 2) extract to your web application root directory (so files will be copied into app/controllers, app/views, etc.) 3) By extracting these files MasterView admin pages will be available regardless of the config.enable_admin_pages setting. Remove or rename the MasterView Admin pages 'masterview_controller.rb' when moving to prevent access in production. -OR Alternatively- 1) use rake mv: commands which duplicate that which is available in the admin pages We will announce a MasterView maintenance release for the gem and plugin permanently resolving these problems as soon as it is fully tested. Note that in the render command the partial is not used, but the actual file name it is added in. render :partial => 'foo/bar' uses foo/_bar.rhtml for the filename and that is what you would use to view_rhtml with rake mv:view_rhtml RHTML=foo/_bar.rhtml I'll double check the code for this, but I do remember testing those scenarios. PS. I just about got the fix for rails 1.1.6, but found out that one of my client's sites was having problems because of the rails upgrade (not masterview problem). So I spent the last several days upgrading and debugging those packages. Joy, joy. But, I am in the home stretch with that and then I'll get back to the fix for admin pages. This caused the configurable MasterView admin page controller to not be located. MasterView release 0.2.5 fixes this incompatibility by extending the safe_load_paths. Fix rake mv:view_rhtml RHTML=foo/_bar.rhtml was not able to find partials Fix rails environment not being passed into configuration Added default generate filter which will add in a default generate directive if none is found in template Changed default_parser_options to be merged in with original set rather than to be absolute replacement Corrected example settings.rb win32 tidy_path to point to tidy.dll not tidy.exe. Release 0.2.4 Fixed apache2 scgi problem where masterview was not being loaded at startup. Added Interactive template console to admin pages for testing/learning how masterview directives worrk. PS. As this email is going out, masterview.org site is down for the addition of more memory, but should be up later today, but this does not affect getting the latest gem or source which is located on Rubyforge.org. MasterView's generator works just like the rails scaffold generator in that it generates code only when you run it so then you can modify it for production (move things, rename, take things out). If it were always generating then you could not do any of those things. The idea is that it gets you up and going quickly and then you can take it from there. If you want to get the new fields that were migrated in then you simply need to rerun the masterview generator and it will prompt you as to whether you want to override the existing files. Say yes and it will pick up your new fields. Of course in doing this you could lose some of your customizations if you made any.
