I guess you can keep the semi-colon by escaping the &: "BS\&T;".
In any case, I would argue against kramdown accepting "&T;" as is
because it doesn't know a T entity. The day W3C decides to define it
and Thomas upgrades kramdown, many documents would become invalid
without their authors knowing.
