Yes, you're right, I'll do that in the next release. I didn't think of that because I tend not to use the mysql command line utilities (but I'm probably atypical). Its an excellent question that I don't (yet) have an answer for. I know that this is a problem that begs for a solution (or at least for some assistance), but I haven't yet had the bandwidth to think about it. A possible answer to my own query. What I'm doing at the moment is just keeping a directory that holds copies of what I want to preserve, from which I make copies into the appropriate places in the renewed InstRails directory tree. That could be automated with a Windows .bat file or a .rb script Looking for a solution that keeps this within the Ruby family, I guess that Rake could be used to do the distribution of files to their final locations? For a small (say <10) number of files or subdirectories a rakefile could be built and maintained 'by hand' - after that it might get a bit unwieldy? Q: can rake safely invoke gem to keep a set of gems updated? This is from someone new to Ruby - I've never fired up Rake, so this is all speculative - guidance based on experience would be welcome. Or, perhaps, an upgrade script written in ruby (or rake/ruby) could analyze the changes that have been made in the Instant Rails directory tree (this would require me to include a manifest of all the files in the dirstribution and their original timestamps) and would offer to copy all new or modified files to a new installation. It could be smart enough to know certain files may require hand-merging. I could even include WinMerge in the distribution and use it to open such files for merging. You said: "I could even include WinMerge " Until earlier today I hadn't heard of WinMerge. It popped up on lifehacker.com this morning, and I had pushed it onto my stack of 'possibly useful tools to look at sometime'. I've now popped it off that stack and looked at it. Handy! I think that solves my problem for now, thanks. Incidentally, I had considered the 'copy all missing files to the new installation' option but had discounted doing it unilaterally, (ie. 'mindlessly') because there might be times when re-instating a file that has been deliberately deleted might be the Wrong Thing To Do. (eg Version 'minus one' might have needed a config file to force some unusual options to cope with some immature code. Now the code is good the default options become the correct ones. Dropping the previous config options back in might break the behaviour of the new code.) Preview4 was not announced and also only changed one thing: when you select the "Open Ruby Console Window" menu command, the resulting console window now has ...\mysql\bin on the path. Instant Rails -- Change Log =========================== 2005-11-08: Instant Rails 1.0 preview5 * Upgraded Rails to Rails 1.0: The Release Candidate 4 (aka 0.14.3) 2005-11-01: Instant Rails 1.0 preview4 * Added mysql\bin to the path in console windows. 2005-10-27: Instant Rails 1.0 preview3 * Upgraded Rails to Rails 1.0: The Release Candidate 3 (aka 0.14.2) * Upgraded to SCGI Rails Runer 0.4.3 * Added "fxri" to the help menu. * Fixed a problem where console windows were being opened in the wrong current directory. This meant that ruby\bin wasn't being put on the path which, in turn, meant you couldn't execute the "gem" or "rails" commands. * Fixed several minor problems. * Created this change log! I'm not sure, but I know its not specific to Instant Rails, because I've seen postings to the Rails ML about this (although I haven't read them to know any more details). Check out this: http://search.gmane.org/?query=mysql+lost+connection&group=gmane.comp.lang.ruby.rails and if you can't find an answer there, post you query to the Rails ML. I'm working with a couple others on a problem related to typo and scgi... Either some routing code has to be rewritten or some other patch to make caching work with scgi. If you mount scgi on the root url: SCGIMount / 127.0.0.1:9999 then all requests are passed into SCGI, and cached pages are not scooped up by the webserver correctly. No caching! ack! The workaround is to mount SCGI on a sub-folder: SCGIMount /scgi-bin/ 127.0.0.1:9998 and then use mod_rewrite to map things over if the file doesn't exist: RewriteRule ^([^.]+)$ $1.html [QSA] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /scgi-bin/$1 [QSA,L] But now all your application urls have a /scgi-bin/ prefix on them, so you have to mess with routes to clean it up. A messy business for typo, because it uses quite a few routes. What I propose, but haven't figured out yet, is some sort of map.base_path('/scgi-bin') that would automatically be stripped out of the request string before further processing. - -- David Morton Maia Mailguard - http://www.maiamailguard.com Morton Software Design and Consulting - http://www.dgrmm.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFDe6TrSIxC85HZHLMRAihHAJ9klFuSMBpptwF8WXvbd/rWz3ygsQCeLvNx D5NCXsXu4C4MblLE/QzsdEI= =jcv4 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From curt.hibbs at gmail.com Wed Nov 16 17:40:44 2005 From: curt.hibbs at gmail.com (Curt Hibbs) Date: Wed, 16 Nov 2005 16:40:44 -0600 Subject: [Instantrails-users] Typo 2.6.0: Typo Themes missing graphics. I've just set up Typo 2.6.0 in Instant Rails preview5 and I've been to resolve all my issues so far with your advice. I wanted to follow up that when I removed "images" from the "don't use SCGI" section it did fix the problem with the theme graphics, but it broke the graphics for the admin pages! I'm still wrapping my head around all this and but it seems that if instead of removing 'images' from the list, I change it to 'images/admin' then the graphics work on both the admin pages and the blog itself. Without lots of messing typo, it doesn't work!. The public/images folder MUST be excluded from SCGI, but not the "images" folders under the themes folder. So, another attempt: # don't handle those with SCGI SCGIHandler Off Notice the "public/images" above. This excludes the static images in Typo, but allows the "images" under the themes to be served by SCGI and the rails routing. Hopefully, this fixes the themes graphics and doesn't break ALL of the static image links in Typo. P.S. If you are using themes other than the Typo default, you'll need to fix the layout/default.rhtml file to match the updated one in the default theme (azure). First, the admin isn't working, then the blog isn't working. The issue, two images folders, one in public and one in the theme. Here are the Third Try steps: 1) From a previous older post To get the admin stylesheet to work with a theme a) Move public/stylesheets/admin.css to themes/azure/stylesheets b) Edit /config/routes.rb and add the following line to the file: map.connect 'stylesheets/:filename', :controller => 'theme', :action => 'stylesheets' ( I added the above at line 60 in the file) 2) Change ALL image refs in themes/azure/stylesheets/azure.css OLD url(../../images NEW url(../../theme_images This avoids the conflict with the "images" in the httpd.conf file. 3) Revert the httpd.conf file back to: #****************************** typo 2.6.0 **************************************** ##### TYPO ##### ServerName typo260 # handle all requests through SCGI SCGIMount / 127.0.0.1:9990 # (*** CHANGE #1 FOR TYPO ***) # Changed to Typo folder (typo-2.5.6) - Ed Gard 10/15/05 DocumentRoot ${path}/rails_apps/typo-2.6.0/public Options +FollowSymLinks Order allow, deny allow from all AddDefaultCharset utf-8 ErrorDocument 500 /500.html ErrorDocument 404 /404.html # matches locations with a dot following at least one more characters, # that is, things like *.html, *.css, *.js, which should be delivered # directly from the filesystem. Did the above really solve the theme issues? My Typo blog appears, now, to be working correctly, but that may not mean much... E Gard wrote: Hi, Well, my first atempt to fixing the theme's graphics issues has caused more trouble. P.S. If you are using themes other than the Typo defa! ult, you'll need to fix the layout/default.rhtml file to match the updated one in the default theme (azure). Eric Lund wrote: Hi, Thanks for your tips on getting Typo running in Instant Rails. I'm JUST getting my feet wet and Instant Rails has b! een great! I'm still wrapping my head around all this and but it seems that if instead of removing 'images' from the list, I change it to 'images/admin' then the graphics work on both the admin pa! ges and the blog itself. Not sure that's the best fix (indeed I'm not really sure what I did!), but a fix nonetheless. It was driving me crazy, the site seemed to frozen in time. This occurred back in Typo 2.5.6 and may not be the case any more. Another thing I like about having ALL of the cache file in one place is that I can delete them by hand and not worry about deleting something needed by the blog. I'm also going to add the cache folder to the list for no SCGI, just in case that might be an issue. This may not be needed, but its my nature. Please post any updates on the caching issues. I'm not up to speed on the rewriting rules or apache, in general. Love to learn more. When a cached page is hit, it is a simple static page from the webserver... no rewriting is done (except to add .html to the filename internally) and no scgi or rails code is even touched. This is accomplished via the rewrite rules: RewriteRule ^([^.]+)$ $1.html [QSA] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /dispatch.cgi?$1 [QSA,L] 1 It maps the url to a .html file, 2 Tests if it exists, 3 and runs rails if it doesn't exist. (that line was for fcgi, but it's the same for scgi (with one caveat that is being worked on)) If you move the cache folder, then those files never exist, and page caching will not work. (note: fragment and action caching are different and their cache files are stored elsewhere. see: http://api.rubyonrails.com/classes/ActionController/Caching.html ) You could move the DocumentRoot of your webserver to your cache directory, but then you'd have to move everything else too, to no net change. As for the site being frozen in time... When something changes, a sweeper process goes through and deletes the files, forcing a fresh run of rails. I saw some stale pages, but they always came up right when I held shift and clicked reload. I suspect the problem is that the web browser is caching the file... so it's probably not a problem with rail. check your production log in log/ and you should see some mentions of sweeping; that is rails deleting the stale cache files, and should happen whenever data changes. I just updated it with what works for me. Note, I added a patch for rails to work with scgi and caching better; it was also affecting themes somehow. Make sure both are the same. Also, check to make sure the IIS for Windows XP/2000 is not running * Right click My Computer * Left click Manage * Expand Services and Applications. Check if Internet Information Service is there. * If it is then expand it. Expand Websites. Left click on Default Website * Then Right click Default Websit and if STOP is available to click on then IIS is running on the port InstantRails wants to use. I have a help desk app running on my windows xp box and had the same issues until i changed the port to both in the conf file. The fact that you can start Apache manually says that you really don't have a port conflict and the error mesage is bogus. I'll put this on my todo list to look at, but its going to be tough to debug a problem I can't reproduce. Curt -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This is the port the Apache's mod_scgi will use to talk to the SCGI Rails Runner that actually executes your Rails web app. You app's web pages will be served upt to the user's browser using port 80. I even tried taking out the VirtualHost entry for the cookbook app altogether and I still was getting the cookbook app. As I said, it was even showing me an old index.html for the cookbook app after I modified it just to see if I could see the difference. -- Alex Ezell "Formal Restrictions, contrary to what you might think, free you up by allowing you to concentrate on purer ideas." - Winter Sorbeck in Chip Kidd's "The Cheese Monkeys" From curt.hibbs at gmail.com Mon Nov 28 20:35:50 2005 From: curt.hibbs at gmail.com (Curt Hibbs) Date: Mon, 28 Nov 2005 19:35:50 -0600 Subject: [Instantrails-users] Strange Path Problem In-Reply-To: <71dd7f400511281541k78d56a04jc64536d3a78c6788@mail.gmail.com> References: <71dd7f400511281511m32bf449an226ee0b2f920c505@mail.gmail.com> <438B9006.9090704@dgrmm.net> <71dd7f400511281541k78d56a04jc64536d3a78c6788@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <31d15f490511281735r2258f4fct4451a85b75705fbf@mail.gmail.com> Maybe its your browser cache. Anyway, try this: rename the cookbook directory so that it can't be found by Apache. Either delete the cookbook's VirtualHost section, or make sure you app's VirtualHost appears first in httpd.conf. now try accesing your app. If you still get the cookbook redirect page, then its got to be your browser cache, so hold down the shift key and click on the refresh button (this should bypass your browser cache). This worked like a charm. Somewhere between the Apache conf and the cache the problem was fixed. It may have something to do with a problem with scgi: see a writeup I did at http://typo.dgrmm.net/articles/2005/11/17/scgi-caching-and-rewriting If you scgi mount on /, routes work, but caching and static files don't work. If you scgi mount on /scgi-bin/, and use the rewriting to get it there, then your routes see the ugly /scgi-bin/ which wasn't there on other platforms - unless you use the plugin I mention in that writeup to correct the problem. - -- David Morton Maia Mailguard - http://www.maiamailguard.com Morton Software Design and Consulting - http://www.dgrmm.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFDjUaASIxC85HZHLMRAoIIAKCSM2SgyXNXYCSfB7izyhv6sPNHewCfQ5i4 5A39FUJjWQ/CJegSBUMWieI= =bgbE -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
