The updating stuff, at least, is fixed in the new checkin by this line
in facets/comments.rb:

60  1.2  (why      14-Jul-05): @weblog.storage.touch_entry( entry_id )

I still think my solution is more elegant. :p I can't imagine when an
attachment would change except via the comment system, but who knows. I
free you from having to worry about touching the original entry every
time you dick with attachments.

Plus File.utime seems to fail due to purported permission errors in
cases where command-line "touch" works fine. WTF. 

It's really awesome having a conversation with myself.
