Yes.

It could be my lack of knowledge, but to me it seems like in order for
git pull to work nicely, the branch needs to be set up to track the
remote branch, and in order to get a reference to the remote branch, you
need that initial fetch/update.

It's fine to keep it updated by hand if you want. My only point is that
changes to the mainline repo don't get propagated to its clones
automatically. So if you want to track edge, you can't just track
origin/edge.
