Restarting Lighttpd for each change? Error logging?

I know, but I have a lot of static files to serve with a relatively 
complex directory structure with alias directives to put them in the 
right place.
Or is there an easy way to serve static files from mongrel? Or even 
things like gzip compression, https etc.
