He'll talk about using a declarative style for your features as well as some bits about page encapsulation possibilities with the page-object gem. Following that, Nick Howard will discuss last month's RailsBridge Workshop, which was a big success. If you're tutoring/mentoring a beginner, you might pass this on to them. It does sound a little sketchy -- no it's not a 1-900 number -- so I called it myself and chatted with one of the volunteers. He said they get something like a call or two per day. I wondered how they did screen sharing if that was necessary; he said they might ask the caller to use iChat or join.me. Anyway, the guy I talked to seemed legitimate; your mileage may vary. All, I am new to ROR development, about 2 months in. I just completed a 10-week immersive program in SF called Devbootcamp (www.devbootcamp.com) and am moving back to Denver in a few days. I am looking to engage with the ROR community in Denver/Boulder and was wondering if anyone had any advice on meetups/hack events I should check out. I am looking to continue accelerating my learning as I'm still very new to the game and very eager to learn/build apps with Rails. It's happening September 19th-21st in Boulder. This is our third year running and again we're in the Boulder Theater, which is a great venue for a single track conference. We're bringing in an awesome collection of speakers covering both technical and non-technical topics during our session days. We're also hosting a day of charity workshop sessions that will let you hone your Ruby skills as well as support our local charities. You can look over all the details at our website: http://rockymtnruby.com/ Registration is open and tickets are $200 until September 1st. This is a bargain for such a great experience. It's all about learning more about Ruby, meeting other developers and having the conversations that flow from all being together. Student discounts are available. Our full schedule is published including our after events. This year we've got our welcome reception hosted at Oak at 14th on Wednesday night (19th). We've bought out the restaurant so we'll have full run of the place. They're doing a pig roast for us as well as making a special cocktail for the evening. Show up, get your badge and swag then meet your fellow attendees all while enjoying the great food and beverages. Following that there's a robotics hackfest put on by Quick Left and Sparkfun with Ruby. To end off the night we've got a limited space tequila and mescal tasting. On Thursday after the sessions we've got Pivotal Labs hosting a hackfest along with an optional brewery tour, including the chance to ride that 18th person bike, My Handle Bar, around downtown to visit the cool bars (Mountain Sun anyone?). On Friday we'll have our Sanitas hike in the late afternoon and Quick Left will close out the conference with the afterparty. It should be a great time and I really hope to see all of you out here. We've been in discussion the past couple months about diversity in our programming communities. A small community around RailsBridge has formed and they're beginning to bring in new women programmers. We wanted to build on that by creating the 'Opportunity Scholarship'. It's a free pass for the conference and workshop for beginner programmers that are primarily women, minorities or other under-represented groups. We're going to also match these folks up with experienced programmers to be their guide during the conference. This way the whole process isn't as intimidating. If you or someone you know fits into this description, encourage them to read more and apply: http://rockymtnruby.com/scholarship Deadline is September 7th but we strongly encourage those interested to apply immediately. We have limited spots available and will be rewarding them as they come in. Also the conference twitter account, @rockymtnruby, tweeted the announcement earlier and we'd appreciate you all spreading the word. Many of these people aren't on these sort of mailing lists so outreach is very important.
