From prakblr at yahoo.com Mon Nov 1 01:38:19 2010 From: prakblr at yahoo.com (Prakash N Murthy) Date: Sun, 31 Oct 2010 22:38:19 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Boulder Ruby Group] Anyone available to pair on PPP Monday or Tuesday? Message-ID: <716845.41823.qm@web65413.mail.ac4.yahoo.com> Anytime works. Remote pairing OK too. Let me know.? The app is coming along fine so far, with awesome contributions from many in the Boulder Ruby Community! Do check out the website.? The progress has been much slower than what I had originally thought of - but thats OK because its been an incredible learning experience for all involved!? While it is attractive to have the web-site up and running in quick time by having a couple of Rails experienced folks work on it for a couple of days, I think it is better that the process of building the web-site help people learn stuff at the same time. After all, the website's aim is to promote learning through paired programming.? In that context, I invite the experienced Ruby and Rails professionals in the community to contribute to the project by pairing with someone else - preferably someone who is a beginner in Ruby / Rails. The steps to contribute to the project are documented on the github repository page.? I am immensely thankful to Mike Gehard, Patrick Reagan, Elliot Winkler, Ben Brinkerhoff, Ryan Angilly & Dave Kapp for spending many hours pairing with me over the last week to get the site to where it is now, and to allow me to learn from their experience. Also, thankful to Ben Atkin, Sean Luckett, Craig Anderson and Marty Haught for their inputs.? No matter what stage the app is at, I am planning to demo it as part of a lightning talk at the Ruby Conf next week :-) Thanks! Tim Pease will be covering RVM. I'd like to have someone else present on a complimentary topic. Bundler or environment setup type topics. It can be short such as 10-15 minutes if you'd like. http://boulderruby.org/meetings/2010/10/28/november-2010/ For December, I'm thinking of doing a show and tell on your Ruby dev stack. The idea would be to bring your favorite gems/plugins/libs that you use to do your Ruby work. Things that save you time, help you go faster, etc. It would be nice to cover the gamut on resources that many of us use. I'm hoping that collectively we can show best of breed in terms of libraries that are cutting edge that some of us may not be aware of. Finally, I have some extra t-shirts and Sigg bottles from mountain.rb. If you'd be interested in buying some, let me know. I'll be selling them at about cost. Bottles are $15 and t-shirts are $5. I'll be swinging by the dojo and pivotal over the next couple weeks as well as our Nov meeting. If you're interested please email me offlist and I can arrange to bring what you're like with me. If you're available and interested, apply online (see below) and drop me a note off-list. Best regards, Josh --cut here-- Spectra Logic is building an ambitious product focused on intelligent disk storage. Our roadmap involves clustered systems, workflow for data-intensive applications, and even a new coat of paint on the chassis. (You can help pick the shade of red). We're building this with the latest toys from the server virtualization and filesystem worlds, and we get our hands dirty in everything from hardware to kernel code to GUI. The last part is where we need you. We're looking for somebody to own our product's user interface. You would be responsible for: * Defining the GUI by working with the product owner, conducting user interviews, and studying precedent from related and competing products. And make ours better than theirs, of course. * Building the GUI and REST web services using modern techniques. We're using Ruby on Rails, so you need to know that coming in. If you want to change that later, make your case, we're open. * Working with the rest of the team to integrate with and manage systems-level stuff ranging from networking to advanced storage topologies. * Testing the snot out of things. We've got fully-automated unit tests and system-level tests in engineering, and you'll need to make sure our test guy has when the needs for browser-based Selenium testing. It's a hard job with a diverse set of requirements: * Competent to awesome programming skills with Ruby and C. * Working knowledge of Unix-like systems. Have you used "df -h" in the last week? * Aesthetic design sense for beautiful user interfaces. Remember when you got your iPhone and thought "wow, this is slick." That's what I'm talking about. * Graphic design skills are desired but not required; knowing what you need from the graphics is required. * Ability to work in an agile environment. You get two weeks of uninterrupted time, but the world could change at the next sprint planning. * Must play nice with others. If you can't work in a team, you won't get anything done here (or most anywhere else). Submit your resume and a cover letter (link below) explaining why you'd make a great member of our team. Status: Full Time, Direct Hire Exempt Position. Benefits: Spectra Logic provides a casual work environment, competitive salaries, and a compensation structure that rewards contribution and hard work. Our full benefits package includes 401(k), medical, life, AD&D, flex spending accounts, educational assistance, and company paid short and long term disability. Please apply online if interested, look for "105: Senior Programmer/ Designer" at this URL: http://www.spectralogic.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=career.openings&CatID=66 (Does that URL make you itch?
