At this point we're going to do a code review night. A few people have requested this and I think it could be a lot of fun. Here's what I'd like to do. Those of you brave enough to submit some code samples for review, please email me offlist. Rails, gems, Merb, Sinatra, anything that is written in Ruby is game. I'll have some of our experienced regulars look it over and as a group will go over this code to talk about possible refactorings, good design and idiomatic ruby. If no one sends in any code, I'll find something to look over. Also, I don't have any other scheduled talks for the rest of the summer. If you'd like to present at the group, please drop me an email with your idea. I know several of you are working on some cool things out there that would make a good talk. Thanks in advance. As always for more details on the upcoming meetings or directions, visit the website. It'll be held at 7pm, June 17th, at Collective Intellect's digs (directions below). The theme for this month's meeting is on code reviews. First off, Justin Smestad is going to show off his side project, http://refactorme.com/. Next up, I'll present a list of 10 golden rules of good code recently posted to spur discussion on what makes good code. Finally, we'll do some live code reviews of several bits of software as a group. We have several submissions but we'll be flexible with the rest of the meeting so if you want to have some code reviewed, walk-ins will be honored. The code reviews won't assume the code is well or poorly written and I suspect we'll see bits of both so to make the discussion of good Ruby code more valuable. The meeting will contain the usual socializing, snacking and after meeting mingling so come hang out in Boulder with the group. See you there. Cheers, Marty Haught http://boulderruby.org Directions: Collective Intellect 1433 Pearl St, Suite 200 Boulder, CO 80302 The office is behind and above Starbucks on Pearl. The entrance is on Pearl Street just east of Starbucks, behind the statue of the wolf. Come straight through all the doors. I know I showed up infrequently, and participated even less, but you can be sure that I learned a ton from you all. Thanks for being a great local Ruby group. And thanks especially to Marty and Jeremy for being great guys. See you all at MWRC next year. Chris Shea From mghaught at gmail.com Sat Jun 20 22:29:14 2009 From: mghaught at gmail.com (Marty Haught) Date: Sat, 20 Jun 2009 20:29:14 -0600 Subject: [Boulder Ruby Group] July and June wrap-up Message-ID: <57f29e620906201929w2f8274c1u176aea9b03a2d6ac@mail.gmail.com> I'm finally getting this email out. I wanted to thank everyone for a fun June meeting. The discussion on good code was fabulous and went much longer than I anticipated. I also enjoyed the code review on Dan's SimpleDB Datamapper adapter library. Too bad we were running so late. I did post the slides from my 10 commandments of good Ruby code via twitter but I'll mention them here too. http://martyhaught.com/articles/2009/06/18/10-commandments-of-good-ruby-code/ As you just saw from yesterday's email Chris Shea is moving to New York. Thanks for coming out to one last Boulder Ruby meeting and good luck in the Big Apple! I appreciate even when any of you can come out to just a meeting or two when you can. It's nice to see all the local Rubyists at least once or twice. Another bit of news is that I've registered a twitter account for Boulder Ruby at @boulderruby. I plan to post meeting reminders and any changes of plans there. Any other short updates will be found there too. Make sure you follow it if you're interested in the group. As for July I haven't scheduled any talks yet. Anyone interested in presenting anything? I might also request talks for August while I'm at it. Please contact me offlist if you're interested. Cheers, Marty
