I have put together a web site for local music schedules in the mountains in Ruby on Rails: http://www.mountainshows.com. I'm very happy with the RoR framework, and the performance on a low cost shared hosting provider: ocssolutions.com has been pretty fast using lighttpd. I hope to switch it over to mongrel to improve the performance even more. Hopefully someday I can make it to the front range for one of your meetings! We'll be starting at our usual time of 6:30pm. The main focus of the April meeting will be on lightning talks. We had a great round of lightning talks back in the fall and several of you have requested we do another round. I fully agree and now we're doing that. So what is a lightning talk? It's a short 5-10 minute presentation on some Ruby related topic. It could be a brief overview of a Gem you've been using (or maybe wrote) that you want to share with the group. It could be a cool Rails plugin as well. Maybe you've got a cool new app that you want to share and show off the cool work you've recently done. All of these could be great lightning talks. If you are interested in doing a lightning talk, please email me offlist and let me know what you want to present on. But that's not the only thing we'll be doing on the April meeting. Ara Howard is going to present a moderate (easy for your Ruby meta programmers out there) Ruby puzzle for you to ponder. He'll do so at the beginning of the meeting so bring your laptops and hack away at it during the transitions between talks. At the end of the meeting Ara will go over the answers and we can discuss them. It looks like a good meeting so I hope to see you all there. Location with directions are listed below. Cheers, Marty Directions: Collective Intellect 1414 Pearl St., Suite 200 Boulder, CO 80302 It is located on the East end of the walking mall above a store called "Baby Doll" on the South side. In light of this we've moved the meeting to Tuesday, May 15th to accommodate those of you who will be traveling on Wednesday. For May's meeting we have Jay Phillips presenting on Adhearsion which is a cool Ruby framework for integrating VoIP via Asterisk. You can check it out at http://adhearsion.com. Bruce Williams will also be presenting. We'll have more details on his talk as we get closer. This is a special meeting in that this will be Bruce's last meeting as a Colorado resident. He'll be moving to Austin, TX in June. So come and wish Bruce the best of luck at our May meeting. It is traditional that after the meeting we head over to the Lucky Dog pub down the block. Bob will present on "Behavior Driven Development: An Evolution in Testing". The meeting will be held at the PPA Event Center near Downtown Denver. The doors will open at 6:00pm for networking and refreshments. Behavior Driven Development (BDD) is not a revolution in testing, but an evolution in how developers think about program design. BDD was born from the idea that most developers were not realizing the full potential from Test Driven Development (TDD). Many people have said that TDD is not about testing but about design. However, the language of "testing" impedes the novice from using TDD as a design tool. The rSpec project is an implementation of BDD in Ruby. Taking advantage of the language's flexibility, rSpec gives the developer a rich language in which to express behavior, from the unit level up to story acceptance. rSpec is a unit testing framework that tries to focus the developer on defining the behavior of classes instead of testing private methods and internal state. rSpec also includes a mock objects framework. In this talk Bob Cotton, test architect at Rally Software, will: * Discuss the language of testing and how it impedes developers from reaching the real benefits of TDD. * Cover rSpec, the Ruby framework for BDD. * Show how Rally has leveraged these concepts for the definition of acceptance tests. AGENDA: 6:00 - 6:30 PM Refreshments, networking and announcements 6:30 - 8:00 PM Bob Cotton presentation SPEAKER With over 12 years of developing and testing web applications, Bob has extensive experience testing applications using open source testing tools. From unit, load, functional and GUI testing Bob has applied many tools and techniques to testing large scale, SaaS (Software as a Service) applications. Most recently at Rally Software Development (www.rallydev.com), Bob has helped shape an Agile software methodology by including unique approaches to software test automation. Automated testing, using tools such as FitNesse and Selenium, are integrated into the development process from the beginning of each iteration. Prior to joining Rally, Bob worked as the System Architect at SynXis Corp, where he helped build and test a high-volume (multi-million messages a day) hotel reservation system. Bob holds a B.S. in computer science from George Mason University. The class on June 9th will be for people who have little or no experience with Ruby and want to move up to a strong intermediate level. I'll also be throwing in some advanced topics for good measure. If there is enough demand, I might teach this "crash course in programming" class on June 2nd. The goal of this class would be to help people that don't have a solid foundation in software development. Topics would include CS 101 type stuff, e.g. the difference between procedural and object-oriented programming. I plan on teaching the "Accelerated Ruby" class throughout the summer, along with an advanced Ruby class, and different levels of Rails classes. I hope that clears things up. Sorry about that.
