It's an issue with gettext plural forms. I'm a bit of a newcomer to
gettext myself, but if you look at de.po and search for plural, you
should get an example of how plurals are handled in gettext.

The gettext info manual, chapter 3 "The Format of PO Files" deals with
all the details of how plural forms work. Or there's the HTML version:

to see if we had any translators left working on Alexandria after such a
long pause in development.

It's great that you got back to me, and it's really fantastic that there
are so many people willing to keep working on translating the program
after all this time.
