If you happen to notice the manual describing non-existant features, or things that are different from the way the program actually works, make a note (to help me!) and just document the way things really are. The only main thing is to keep the id the same for all
elements, so that the Help buttons throughout the program point to the correct sections. Note: there is a French translation of the manual, (based on the old 0.6.1 manual) - it might help with how translators add author details etc. Thanks, - Cathal. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... There are only a handful of changes since the last announcement, thankfully. If you have the latest SVN of alexandria (r821) then you can start working on the newly merged po files. You can also download your po file from this web location http://alexandria.rubyforge.org/svn/trunk/alexandria/po/ and e-mail the updated files to me. I also added a page about the translations to the Alexandria website: http://alexandria.rubyforge.org/features/translations.html I hope the 0.6.2 release will take place this week, but don't worry if you miss it; 0.6.3 will hopefully follow on within a few weeks. Yes. I'll let you inform what I notice something wrong. > The only main thing is to keep the id the same for all

I'll take care of them. I don't know I can finish my translation until 0.6.2 release time, but don't wait me. There are two points to be added I notice for now. 1. A PNG image file is also available for book cover image. 2. The CueCat barcode scanner is never (at least for me) seen in Japan. When using the word "barcode scanner" on book's context, it means a intelligent barcode reader which uses laser light and it outputs recognized ISBN number. When using this device to add new book, you only select ISBN field and push scanner's button to read barcode (no need to push Enter key). So I think it is good to add some notes about this to "To add a book by scanning its barcode" section. Not sure whats best practice, but when should the "Project-Id-Version: alexandria 0.5.1\n" string be updated ? when merging, or when updating the strings? I don't know why alexandria.pot files is disappeared, but it should have "Project-Id-Version: PACKAGE VERSION\n" and PACKAGE VERSION should be automatically replaced real version number when creating {lang}.po file. This would work when creating a new po file, but updated values wouldn't copy across when using msgmerge (I tried it). I think the translators should probably update the value when they're translating for a particular release; so if the string-freeze is for 0.6.2 you'd change it to: "Project-Id-Version: alexandria 0.6.2\n" just before you check-in or e-mail the po file. That way, for unmaintained translations, we'll know what version of the program was last translated for that language. (Because if I updated the version number for e.g. the fr translation to 0.6.2 when I merged all the po files, future maintainers might think a translator had been working on the 0.6.2 fr translation - in fact, fr is unmaintained). I can modify the current files before this release though; I also want to make sure the headers all look similar, and to add a few standard header comments. - Cathal. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... What do I have to do? Hi Adri?n, I'm Cathal Mc Ginley, one of the administrators of Alexandria - and I sort of co-ordinate the translation team, although I'm pretty new to the whole process. (I am also trying to work on my first Irish (ga) translation for Alexandria.) Thanks for offering to help. In common with most internationalized free software, Alexandria uses 'gettext' for localization. Most GNU/Linux distributions will have the GNU gettext package already installed. The gettext manual gives an excellent introduction to this system: http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/ The short version is, translators only have to translate the user-visible strings; these are gathered together in a single PO file. The PO file for Galician will be called gl.po - we start with a blank 'PO Template' called alexandria.pot (generated from the latest program sources). Grab the current version here: http://www.gnostai.org/tmp/alexandria-0.6.2/alexandria.pot You can just rename it to gl.po and start working on it. There are a couple of programs available to help you work with the PO file: * If you use GNU Emacs, there is po-mode (optionally installed as part of GNU gettext-tools). This is what I use. * For GNOME, there is Gtranslator which seems quite easy to use. * For KDE, KBabel is the commonly used program. Then, for each msgid you enter a translated msgstr. You save the modified PO file, and test it with a development version of Alexandria. (I might write more about that later). What I do, from the SVN checkout of alexandria, is: sudo rake install LANG=ga_IE alexandria In any case, you can do a lot of translation even before setting up your test environment. When your translation is done (or partially done) send the PO file to me (not this list) and I'll integrate it. Translating comptuter-style phrases can be a real pain: the sort of technical language and very terse style can be very hard to deal with in non-English languages. (I find this particularly problematic in Irish.) You might look at other free software which is already translated into your language, that might give you an idea of how some common terminology is used. (In the future, I hope we can change the language of the user-interface to make it easier to translate.) Welcome to Alexandria, - Cathal. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
