For some reason, this particular instance of the app under the same Apache server running Passenger had JAVA_HOME being set to nil. Adjusted the .htaccess entries to ensure the environment was being setup properly. MY_RUBY_HOME was correct pointing to the gem files in the .rvm directory. Thanks very much for your help.
