I actually ran into other problems on other software as well trying to compile with the Sun compiler. I was able to get the admin to put gcc 3.4.3 on that box. Then I recompiled Ruby with that and tried these steps again and it worked. So just needed to update the oraconf.rb and the other steps worked.
