For my needs customizing and recompiling OCI8 would probably not be portable enough. It's good to know that it is an option, though.
When working with ordinary IO I can override Encoding::default_internal by specifying :internal_encoding in the options hash when opening the IO. Something like that would be helpful to me, but I admit my needs are special, and I don't know if it would be feasible in the context of OCI8.
