It's pretty difficult to tell if the DBI project is still alive / who's responsible, etc.
I've been trying to dig deeper into DBI and there's a number of problems I've been running into, not necessarily with the code itself, but with the structure of the project. Here's a loose collection of my thoughts regarding the subject with some suggested solutions which I would be willing to put some work into if there is feedback.
* The "homepage" (http://ruby-dbi.rubyforge.org/) doesn't really provide a lot of orientation, there are no links to current status, rubydocs or even downloads. There's also no contact information so it's hard to determine who's responsible. Obvious solution: major overhaul :).
* This forum is well hidden and sleepy, in general, ruby/sourceforge forums aren't as lively as other forms of information. Possible solution: switch to a mailing list or hybrid like ruby-talk ... This would have the added benefit of "pushing" the infos out. There may well be other arenas where DBI is being discussed more actively, but I haven't been able to find one.
* No gem. Solution: provide one :)
* I was looking for sqlite3 drivers and started writing my own before I found that one has already been written. Unfortunately, there's no indication of this anywhere on the homepage's list of drivers and they aren't included in the download. Solution: find out which DBD's are available and create a new release.
Again, I realize the administrators are probably very busy, I'm very willing to help out, but don't really even know who to contact about offering support (apart from sending emails to every address on the homepage). DBI is a very valuable and useful project for ruby and I would hate to see it fade into obscurity.
Thanks,
