RE: Cloudy Scripts with Amazon Windows Instances [ reply ] 2012-01-04 10:55

Hi,
We have added MS Windows support in two new scripts:
- copy MS Windows AMI
- copy MS Windows Snapshot
These scripts are dumping the root volume of the MS Windows AMI using 'dd' and are copying it from one region to another before restoring it on a new volume using 'dd'. This is a different approach than Linux scripts that are mounting the filesystem of the root volume.

Sounds good. I have tried just about every possible solution using Amazon's command line migrate tool (and other methods outlined on the web), and it always gets stopped or results in errors. I think transferring to S3 is a no go, because otherwise it seems one could theoretically copy the licensed server image to a non-AWS server. And packaging and transferring disk images via Linux seems to corrupt the image somehow.
It seems like something Amazon would offer, especially after their Virginia outage earlier this year. I'd like to duplicate my AWS Windows 2003 server in both California and Oregon as it's quite a process to set it all up from scratch (it is a dual WAMP and IIS server with all sorts of database connections).
But it would have taken less time than the time I've spent on trying to migrate it!

Hi John
CloudyScripts does not actually supports migrating Windows based AMI, but this is a feature that should come soon (I hope to have it added till the end of the year, but still depending on our work load) as it is requested by many of CloudyScripts' users.
As far as I know it (and at the time I'm writing this answer), there is no licensing issue for public AMI (that's why you were able to create one based on an AWS one), or AMI you own. Moreover, AMI migration should not go against Windows licensing model as everything should be a per instance hour based price.
We are going to validate that point with AWS.
If you have an urgent need of such a tool, please contact us directly @SelcudIT or fill a Services Offerings request on CloudyScripts.
Regards,
Fred.

I'm trying to migrate a AMI (running Windows 2003 server) from one region to another. When I try with Elastifox, I get an error about only being able to migrate AMI's I've created. I have created the AMI in question, but it is based on a Amazon EBS AMI.
Question: Will cloudyscripts be able to migrate such an AMI?
I'm wondering if it is a Windows licensing issue that prevents AMI parts to be created(?).
