Building displays for Ruby, Python and PHP [ reply ]

I live in greater China, where LED displays are cheap. A badge size display can be as little as $18. The trouble with signs made in Asia is that they are all proprietary and use Microsoft updating tools. I would like to build a LED sign that Linux developers could code for easily, and do interesting projects. The only thing I have found so are is this: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=760 It is not really for Linux per se, but it is the only one that does not use VB to upload information to the sign. The MCU it uses is the ATmega16. I am open to all the MCU's including Microchip and 8051. I would be happy to hear your thoughts.
