Success! Karl, thank you for the stimulus -- contrary to my post of 8-19, which apparently did not take hold, in order to test the gem installation i asked it to do a --system update again and it re-installed the 0.9.4 gem.
As soon as i ran it on long-decimal, your project installed successfully.
Thanks again for the help, and now i'll roll up my sleeves and get to work!

I have tried to install this on WinXP and it did work. We have to investigate why it is failing.
To me this looks like there is an issue with the unpacking of the gem-archives. Can you try to install other gems, to see if your ruby and/or gem installation is working?

I just happened across this reported error for RubyGems which advised an upgrade to gem 0.9.4 -- I did the upgrade but still get the Zlib::Buferr when trying to install the long-decimal.

I have been desperate for something like long-decimal for months(!). Thank you!! However, when I issue...
#>gem install long-decimal
I get...
ERROR: While executing gem ... (Zlib::BufError)
This is on WinXP with Ruby 1.8.5.24, Gem 0.9.2 and Rails 1.2.2.
Maybe I'm doing something silly (it wouldn't be the first time) but your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
