Capgem is an extension to Capistrano which provides a means of building your Rails app to a Gem for distribution in environments which Capistrano can't get to (or where Subversion is unavailable, or where it's running Windows or anywhere else where Capistrano's remote deploy mechanism isn't an option). This is a first stab at it so it's definitely rough and dirty.
