This release of Goldberg includes major enhancements to the internal structure of Goldberg, plus new features including self-registration, FCKeditor support, improved web services and AJAX support, and customisable start paths for users when they log in.

Goldberg is now structured as a plugin with its own separate app/ directory and plugin_migrations (from http://pluginaweek.org). Furthermore its code and database tables are now all namespaced. This allows Goldberg to work as a vertical application slice, with all Goldberg's features kept separate from those of your application.

Self-registration is available for your site if enabled by the administrator. This includes optional ActionMailer integration, so users can confirm their registration and reset their forgotten passwords via email.

FCKeditor offers word processor-style editing for Goldberg's content pages. This is an optional feature that is automatically enabled if you download FCKeditor and install it into your site's public/ directory. Goldberg's FCKeditor support features full back-end integration, including file management and spell checking.

Goldberg now provides a clearer interface for your application to access information about the current user, their role and permissions, what actions they are allowed to invoke etc. This is intended to give application developers the information they need to implement security at the model and view layers, as well as for audit trails etc.

Goldberg's support for both web services and AJAX applications has been improved, with Goldberg's before-filter using Rails' "respond_to" to provide meaningful results depending on the type of communication.

Start paths (where a user is directed when they log in) can now be set on a per-user or a per-role basis.
